The ending -ergie comes from the Greek ergon = work, work. Words with this ending denote a phenomenon that has to do with the size “work”, and less often with “work / effect”. Examples for this are:

  • Anergy - energy that is no longer able to work
  • Energy - the quantity that goes into (physical) work.
  • Exergy - energy capable of working
  • Synergy - working together
  • Allergy - strange, unknown effect
