Johann Conrad Develey was born in Lindau in 1822 . He initially made medium-hot and hot mustard according to a French recipe, but invented sweet mustard in 1854 . In 1874 he was awarded the title of “ Royal Bavarian Court Supplier ”. In the 1970s the company was taken over by the Durach family - at that time mainly a sauerkraut producer.

In 1968 the company Develey took over the delicatessen specialist Specht (fine sour delicacies), in 1992 the mustard manufacturer " Bautz'ner Senf ", the market leader in the new federal states, and in 1995 the French mustard manufacturer Reine de Dijon, founded in 1840 .
