history
The area on which the city was later founded used to belong to the Chickasaw Indians. The treaty that took away their right to West Tennessee was signed in 1818. Dyersburg was a landing stage for paddle steamers that came across the Forked Deer River from the Mississippi .
In 1823 the Tennessee General Assembly decided that two new counties should be established west of the Tennessee River . One of them was Dyer County.
From 1884 the city was connected to the county capital Tiptonville, Tennessee. This led to further economic growth.
