After moving to Vienna, in 1840 he leased the run-down Sankt Marx brewery in what is now the 3rd district. The year the company was founded is stated to be 1841. In 1846 Adolf Ignaz made history all over the world when he succeeded in developing a process that made yeast production possible independently of beer production. He is therefore considered to be the inventor of compressed yeast . In 1857 Mautner bought the brewery for 275,000 fl ( guilders ) from the Bürgerspitalfond of the municipality of Vienna, in 1861 the property in Simmering was acquired and a branch for yeast , alcohol and spirits was established.

In 1913 the range was expanded to include delicatessen products. From then on, business activities also extended to the production of vinegar and mustard. In 1927 Mautner Markhof invented the Hesperides vinegar, which is a mixture of brandy vinegar ("spirit vinegar"), wine vinegar and apple juice , and continuously expanded production.

After the Second World War , the company developed into a large industrial operation and the product range was expanded to include horseradish and syrup . Mautner Markhof Feinkost GmbH was spun off from the family estate in 2001 and sold. A restart of the family-owned company failed in 2008. There were no longer any economic ties to Mautner Markhof Feinkost GmbH.
