The Andechser dairy Scheitz GmbH , headquartered in the Bavarian Andechs has around 190 employees and 630 suppliers, the largest German organic dairy .

history

The great-grandparents of today's Scheitz family founded a cheese dairy in Erling near Andechs in 1908. This was expanded into a dairy in 1976 by Georg M. Scheitz, farmer and dairy master. Four years later, “organically produced milk” was processed here for the first time. Due to the increased demand, a new dairy building was built on the outskirts in 1987, which was moved into a year later. To expand the range, began in 1994, in addition to cow's milk and goat's milk to be processed. The company is located at Biomilchstrasse 1 in Andechs.

There were various legal proceedings between the Andechs monastery and the Andechs dairy.

Since 1999, the French dairy group Bongrain (now trading as Savencia ) held a minority stake in the Andechser dairy (initially a third, since 2007 with 24.8%). By order of the Federal Cartel Office, all shares were returned to the Scheitz family on October 1, 2015 for reasons of competition.

In 2008, as part of a transparency initiative, product traceability was introduced on the website. By entering the best-before date on the website, consumers can see which region and which organic farm the milk in the product comes from. In addition, the dairy provides an online interactive map to localize its organic farmers and extensive opportunities to find out more about organic farming. For example, profiles with pictures of the organic farmers are stored.

In 2009 the Andechser dairy lost a legal dispute against Stiftung Warentest before the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court . In a test published in October 2008 on 35 butter brands, Stiftung Warentest rated the organic sour cream butter Andechser Natur (Bioland) as “poor” because it had too few lactic acid bacteria, which are absolutely necessary for the production of sour cream butter is.

The dairy has been processing 100% organic milk since 2009. The milk price is negotiated personally with the organic farmers every eight weeks. The organic dairy also rewards the grazing of organic cows with a grazing bonus on the milk price that is unique in Germany.

In 2015 the administration and the high-bay warehouse were built in line with the philosophy of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser .

Quality assurance and environmental protection

The commitment to organic quality and environmental protection began in 1981, when the dairy was the first company in Germany to implement the deposit-free, brown bottle for milk, despite strong resistance from retailers. During the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, Georg Scheitz secured feed free from radioactive fall-out for his suppliers . In 2004 a modern PET line was installed. Since 2008, the company has enabled end consumers to follow the path of their products on the Internet.

Products

The Andechs dairy has been producing exclusively organic products since 2009. These are marketed under the name “Andechser Natur”. Only organic milk ( Bioland , Naturland , Biokreis and Demeter ) from cows and goats is used for production, which is obtained from 530 organic cow's milk farmers and 100 organic goat's milk farmers. Their around 27,000 cows and 14,500 goats produce around 115 million kg of cow's milk and around 9.4 million kg of goat's milk per year. The total area cultivated organically by the farmers is 35,000 ha , which corresponds to 15% of the total organically cultivated area in Bavaria (2017).

The Andechser Molkerei's range includes around 150 organic dairy products, including milk , yogurts and desserts , butter , cream , whipped cream , quark and cheese .

The dairy obtains its raw milk mainly from the foothills of the Alps.

Prices

In 2006, the Andechser dairy received the “Renner des Jahres” award for the Andechser natural raspberry-lemon yogurt drink in PET packaging, the most successful launch of a new product on the organic market.

In 2017, Andechser Molkerei Scheitz won the German Sustainability Award 2018 with its brand ANDECHSER NATUR . The jury of the sustainability award recognized the professional brand management and stable brand strength in the sustainability area on the one hand, and the creative approaches to communication on the other. In 2018, Andechser was recognized in the YouGov BrandIndex by YouGov and Handelsblatt for the best price-performance ratio from the consumer's point of view in the dairy products category.
