Vetiver [ vɛtivɐ ] ( Vetiveria zizanioides , Syn. : Chrysopogon zizanioides , Andropogon squarrosus . Hack, Andropogon muricatus . Retz) is a native to the tropical Asia coming sweet grass . The grass clumps have a diameter of about 30 cm, the height of the plant is 50 to 150 cm. The roots penetrate into the ground up to three meters deep with a dense and massive network.

Because of its dense network of roots, vetiver is specifically planted wherever there is a risk of soil erosion . The roots also keep the soil moist and can detoxify it to a certain extent. That is why vetiver is planted in Southeast Asia on the one hand to improve the soil, on the other hand as a field border.
The grass is also used as fodder and should be mowed every 1–3 months.
The essential vetiver oil is extracted from the cleaned fresh and / or dried roots , which is used in perfume production, aromatherapy and naturopathy and also serves as incense . The roots are also used as wattle for z. B. mats and shoes are used.
