The Saint-Pauloise Football Club is a football club from the French island of Réunion . The club based in Saint-Paul has existed since the 1920s, but has been founded twice under a new name over the years, for example Stade St. Paulois , Union Sportive de Saint-Paul and Société Sportive de la Saint-Pauloise . The club has had its current name since 2000. So far, the team that plays their home games Stade Paul-Julius-Bénard has won a total of seven national championships and twice the cup.

history

In 1920 the association was founded as Stade St Paulois on the initiative of Mayor Achille Prémont . In 1935, on the initiative of several players, les juniors Saint-Paulois split off from the club and were only reunited with their parent club in 1957 as Union Sportive de Saint-Paul . Therefore, the team, which in 1956, in the founding year of the top division , had risen to the top division , could not continue the game operation in the meantime, gave it up after nine games and consequently were immediately relegated. In 1962 the Union managed to rise again, but four years later they lost the relegation game against Société Sportive Saint-Louisienne 1: 3 and were relegated again, but this time only one season was needed to rise again.

In 1971 there was a scandal in the game against the Football Club de l'Ouest . After a controversial offside decision , which denied the Union as the current league leader the possible 1-1 a few minutes before the end of the game, there were assaults on opposing players, referees and officials after the end of the game. As a result, the club was eliminated from the first division after eleven games, was forcibly transferred to the second division and was not allowed to participate in the cup for two years. The club officials took this as an opportunity to re-establish the club as Société Sportive de la Saint-Pauloise .

Under a new name the direct rise and 1979 the first win of the national championship succeeded. In the 1980s, the club's most successful decade followed with four championship titles and winning the Coupe de France Régionale in 1986, which allowed the club to participate in the Coupe de France for the first time . In the 1990s, the club had noticeably less sporting success, which is mainly due to financial and personal problems. The downward slide culminated in the last place in the 1995/96 season and the associated relegation.

In 2000, the Société Sportive de la Saint-Pauloise and Olympique de Saint-Paul merged to form the Saint-Pauloise Football Club in its current form. This was followed by increasing sporting success towards the end of the 2000s with the cup victory in 2006, winning the Coupe de France Régionale in 2010 and 2012 and the double in 2011. In all previous participations in the French soccer cup, the club has always failed in the opening round, most recently in 2012 with 2 : 3 after extension at USL Dunkerque . In 2014 the national championship title was celebrated again.
