history

middle Ages

Winterbach was an old imperial estate and was first confirmed in 1046 by Emperor Heinrich III. mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex . The emperor issued the certificate for Lorsch on August 28, 1046 in the Palatinate in Winterbach. Henry III. visited the royal court in Winterbach again in December 1048. However, finds suggest that Winterbach was much older. In 1080 the royal courts of Winterbach and Waiblingen came into the possession of the cathedral chapters of Speyer through a donation from Henry IV before the battle of Hohenmölsen . In 1238, a pastor was first recorded in Winterbach and since 1293, viticulture can be traced in the district. With the decline of the Staufer , Winterbach came to the Counts of Württemberg .

In 1309, the Michael Church, which is still standing today, was inaugurated, but the existence of an original church for the middle Rems valley in the village is assumed even before Winterbach was first mentioned in a document . The parish of Winterbach has been run as a branch of the church in Schorndorf since 1369 . When the county of Württemberg was divided in 1442, Winterbach came into the possession of the Stuttgart count line.

In 1490 the church was rebuilt and the Passion frescoes that have survived to this day date from this period.

Modern times

Winterbach residents were also involved in the uprising of poor Konrad in 1514. After Duke Ulrich von Württemberg's return , he introduced the Reformation in the Duchy in 1534 . During the Thirty Years' War the Rems Valley was devastated several times by armies passing through. In 1644 a lightning strike set fire to the church tower, which was rebuilt in the following years. Around 1750 Winterbach achieved a modest level of prosperity, among other things, from 1751 to 1758 the conversion of the Michaelskirche took place.

Winterbach belonged to the office of Schorndorf, but until 1808 it was itself the seat of a subordinate staff office for the surrounding Württemberg villages.

19th century

After the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg , Winterbach remained part of the Oberamt Schorndorf . Bathing began in Winterbach in 1825 after sulfur-containing springs were tapped at Gasthaus Adler. Only 25 years later these dried up and the spa business came to a standstill. As a result, an institution for mentally handicapped children was set up in the bathhouses.

In 1861, Winterbach's transport links improved with the opening of the Remsbahn to Wasseralfingen . Thus, the place was integrated into the rail network of the Württemberg State Railways early on.

In 1874, an asylum for women in need of care was built on the site of the former bathing establishment. A central water supply was built around the turn of the 20th century.

20th century

In 1906 Winterbach was electrified. In 1910 and 1911 there was a bad harvest among the winemakers due to phylloxera , which is why many gave up viticulture. In the course of a regional reform during the Nazi era , Winterbach came to the Waiblingen district in 1938 . In 1945 Winterbach fell into the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was merged into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. After the Second World War , Winterbach developed from an agricultural place into an industrial and service community. The entire canalization took place in 1958. Since the district reform that took place in 1973 , Winterbach has belonged to the Rems-Murr district. In 1978, the town won the state winner in the monument protection and urban development competition . After completion, the new development area Schießwiesen was inaugurated in 2003. The development of the Sterrenberg II building area followed in May 2007 . In the days from January 13th to January 14th 2011 and May 30th 2013 the place had to fight with floods. In 2013 the town center was completely renovated. In 2015, the development work on the Schilfweg construction area was completed.

coat of arms

Town center with Michaelskirche

Description: In red a silver (white) wavy bar, above a golden (yellow) crown, underneath a silver (white) hape with a golden (yellow) handle wood.

The golden crown is a reminder that Winterbach was an old estate and that Emperor Heinrich III. stayed in Winterbach on August 28, 1046 and December 3, 1048. The wavy bar makes the coat of arms "talking" in relation to the second part of the place name.

The Weinberghape is the old coat of arms of Winterbach, which can be traced back to 1831, became a sickle over time and now appears again as Hape.

In this context, Gleisdorfer Platz with access to the Rems was redesigned and the river in the west of the village was renatured . Winterbach took part in the “16 stations”, the garden show's architectural project, with a white monopteros on an orchard in the south above the village. World icon
