Life

Youth and education

Younous Omarjee was born on September 30, 1969 in Saint-Denis on the French island of La Réunion . Already in his school days he was politically active and founded one of the first Comité d'action lycéen (CAL), in German something like "gymnasiales action committee", with which he and his colleagues protested against the Devaquet law . The law was supposed to reform access to French universities.

After finishing school, Omarjee studied law at the Sorbonne from 1987 to 1993. After completing his studies, he returned to La Réunion in 1994 and worked for four years as a project manager in the administration ( Conseil Général ) of the island.

In 1998 Omarjee moved to Paris, where he worked for the Senate Member Paul Vergès of the Parti communiste réunionnais as a research assistant ( parliamentary assistant ). After Vergès was elected to the European Parliament in the European elections in 2004 , Omarjee went with them, and also supported Vergès as a staff member in Brussels and Strasbourg.

Entry into the European Parliament

For the European elections in 2009 Omarjee ran for second place on the list behind the list place first Élie Hoarau of the Alliance des Outre-Mers collection list . In the elections, the list won one of the three seats in the overseas constituency - alongside the PS and the UMP. After Hoarau gave up his mandate three years later, Omarjee moved up on January 4, 2012.

Like Hoarau, Omarjee joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For the parliamentary group, Omarjee was a member of the regional development committee and a deputy member of the legal committee . In addition to his parliamentary activities in Brussels and Strasbourg, Omarjee supported Jean-Luc Mélenchon as a candidate for the French presidential election campaign in 2012 and joined the National Council of the Front de gauche campaign chaired by Pierre Laurent .

In the 2014 European elections , Younous Omarjee ran as the top candidate for the collection list L'union pour les Outremer in the overseas constituency. The list did not give itself any political orientation, but promoted a strengthening of the overseas (French) EU areas. Omarjee received a good 19 percent of the vote in the entire constituency and thus defended his parliamentary mandate.

In the new legislature, too, he again joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left , whose members also elected him to the group's executive committee. In the 8th legislative period (2014-2019) he was a member of the regional development committee for the parliamentary group, of which he was also elected deputy chairman, and of the budget committee . He was also an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety , the Committee on Budgetary Control and the Special Committee on the EU's Pesticide Approval Process .

In the French presidential elections in 2017 , Younous Omarjee once again supported Jean-Luc Mélenchon , candidate of the La France insoumise movement . Omarjee also joined the movement as part of the election campaign.

In December 2017 he was elected one of the most active and committed French MEPs using the “Mep ranking method”. In March 2018, Younous Omarjee received Parliament Magazine's award for the best MEP. The magazine praises him for his actions in favor of regional policy and his commitment to protecting the least developed and most remote regions.

Omarjee ran again for the 2019 European elections , this time as part of the Parti communiste réunionnais in fourth place in the list of La France insoumise , as only a single, all-French constituency was created for the elections. He again defended his mandate. In the 9th legislature (2019-2024), Omarjee represents his group in the Committee on Regional Development , whose members elected Omarjee as committee chairman. He is also a member of the Budget Control Committee and a deputy member of the Budget Committee .
