The Archdiocese of Jakarta ( Latin Archidioecesis Giakartana , Indonesian Keuskupan Agung Jakarta ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Jakarta , Indonesia .
history
In 1807, King of Holland Louis Bonaparte and Pope Pius VII divided the Dutch colonies into three ecclesiastical territories, including two in the Caribbean and the third in the East Indies , based in Batavia . The following year the first Apostolic Prefect was appointed, but the Apostolic Prefecture of Batavia was not actually established until 1826 from cessions of territory from the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon .
On April 3, 1841, the Apostolic Prefecture was elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate. On February 7, 1950, it took the name of the Vicariate Apostolic of Jakarta . On January 3, 1961, it was raised to the rank of metropolitan archbishopric.
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- September 4, 1855 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Labuan and Borneo ;
- February 11, 1905 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Borneo ;
- June 30, 1911 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra ;
- September 16, 1913 to the Lesser Sunda Islands Apostolic Prefecture ;
- November 19, 1919 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Celebes ;
- April 27, 1927 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Malang ;
- February 15, 1928 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Surabaia ;
- April 20, 1932 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Bandung ;
- April 25, 1932 to the Purwokerto Apostolic Prefecture ;
- June 25, 1940 to the Apostolic Vicariate of Semarang ;
