history

Cathedral in Makassar

The Archdiocese of Makassar was on April 13, 1937 by Pope Pius XI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Catholicae fidei from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Celebes as Apostolic Prefecture Makassar . On May 13, 1948, the Apostolic Prefecture Makassar was by Pope Pius XII. With the Apostolic Constitution in Archipelagi Indonesiani raised to the Apostolic Vicariate .

On January 3, 1961, the Apostolic Vicariate Makassar was by Pope John XXIII. elevated to an archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Quod Christ . The Archdiocese of Makassar was renamed the Archdiocese of Ujung Pandang on August 22, 1973 . On March 15, 2000, the Ujung Pandang Archdiocese was renamed the Makassar Archdiocese .
