The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Medan ( Latin Archidioecesis Medanensis ) is in Indonesia located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Medan .

history

The Archdiocese of Medan was established on June 30, 1911 by Pope Pius X from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Batavia as the Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra . On December 27, 1923, the Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefectures Benkoelen and Bangka and Biliton . The Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra was renamed the Apostolic Prefecture of Padang on December 27, 1923 .

On July 18, 1932, the Padang Apostolic Prefecture was founded by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Ut aucto raised to the Apostolic Vicariate . The Apostolic Vicariate Padang was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Medan on December 23, 1941 . The Apostolic Vicariate Medan gave on November 17, 1959 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Sibolga .

On January 3, 1961, the Apostolic Vicariate Medan was by Pope John XXIII. elevated to an archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Quod Christ .
