The Archdiocese of Palembang ( Latin Archidioecesis Palembangensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Palembang , Indonesia . It includes the provinces of Jambi , Bengkulu , Lampung , Riau , Bangka-Belitung and Sumatra Selatan .

history

Pope Pius XI founded the Apostolic Prefecture Benkoelen on December 27, 1923 from cession of the Apostolic Prefecture Sumatra . With the Apostolic Constitution Apostolica it was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate on June 13, 1939 and took the name, Apostolic Vicariate Palembang .

On June 19, 1952, it lost part of its territory in favor of the establishment of the Apostolic Prefectures of Padang and Tandjung-Karang . On January 3, 1961, she was raised to the diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Medan as a suffragan. On July 1, 2003, it was raised to the rank of Metropolitan Archdiocese.
