Sunset Key is an island of the Florida Keys with an area of 135,852 square meters located approximately 460 m from the coast of Key West Island in the Florida Keys and serves as a residential area and resort . The island belongs to the urban area of Key West and thus to Monroe County (Florida) and had 17 permanent residents as of the 2000 census. The island is privately owned by its residents, especially the owner of the Key West Westin hotel chain Westin Hotels & Resorts who runs a small group of guest cottages . There are 48 single-family homes and 21 vacant lots on the island, each valued at over $ 1.5 million. The island is only accessible via a boat shuttle from the Westin Marina.

The closest island is Wisteria Island about 200 meters further north.

history

The official name of Sunset Key is Tank Island. The United States Navy used Tank Island as a fuel depot for Key West during the Cold War era . In 1965, passageways for submarines and other large ships were dredged on the island. However, the Navy changed plans and the island was no longer used for military purposes. So only two of the twelve planned tanks were built and although the fuel lines were built, they were never filled.

In 1986 the government sold Tank Island and other Key West anchorages at auction to Pritam Singh of New England. In 1988 the tanks were dismantled, while the remaining fuel lines were used as lines for water and sewage. In addition, power cables were laid next to the existing lines.

In 1994 the island was bought again and renamed Sunset Key. The island has since been largely owned by Tom Walsh, who also owns the Westin Key West Resort & Marina. Another property owner is an entrepreneur from Hamburg.
