Truman Annex is a neighborhood and a military facility on the western edge of Key West on the island of Key West in the Florida Keys . The district includes the urban area west of Whitehead Street with the exception of Bahama Village . The Truman Annex is home to the Harry S. Truman Little White House , the president's winter residence in the former Key West Naval Station. Harry S. Truman stayed here for 175 days during a total of 11 visits to the city.

history

"The Annex" was built in 1845 as part of Fort Zachary Taylor , a facility of the US Army . The fort was probably converted in 1947 from the "Fort Zachary Taylor Annex" to Naval Station Key West. 1,932 new docks were as home base for submarines of the US Navy built. In 1974 the base was largely abandoned because the facilities for the modern nuclear submarines were too small. Today the Naval Air Station Key West operates about 10 kilometers east on the island of Boca Chica Key as the primary base of the Navy in Key West.

The area of the former fort is now owned by the state of Florida and has been named "Fort Zachary Taylor State Park". A large part of the annex was sold to private investors who converted it into a closed residential complex , and an area of around 130,000 m 2 was given to the City of Key West as green space free of charge. The rest of the area is still used as a military facility and is known as "Naval Air Station Key West - Truman Annex".

During the Mariel boat crisis in the 1980s, many Cuban refugees came to the United States via the Truman Annex.
