Wisteria Island , also known as Christmas Tree Island , is a privately owned, uninhabited island in the Lower Florida Keys , 600 m northwest of the Historic Seaport neighborhood in northwest Key West . It is located 250 m north-northeast of Sunset Key ( Tank Island ) and is one of the most famous photo opportunities in Florida. Anyone who films the sunset from Mallory Square captures this island on their film.
Wisteria Island has an area of 106,346 m². The nickname Christmas Tree Island comes from the large number of casuarinas that grow here.
history
Wisteria Island was created - similar to the neighboring island Tank Island ( Sunset Key ) - as a result of dredging in the port of Key West. At the end of the 19th century, the excavation began to be deposited at this point. In the 20th century this deposit was used repeatedly to deposit the sediments from the dredging work there.
The island was named after the steamer Wisteria, which ran aground on this headland in 1925 and was burned down.
In the 1930s, Monroe County sold the island to Bernie Papy for $ 3,000. An industrial shark processing facility was located on the island in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The products were marketed worldwide and sold as far as China. It was operated by Ray Knopp and Thompson Enterprises. In 1956 Papy sold the island to the Wisteria Corporation. The aim of this group was to create commercial and residential space on the island. The company was renamed Wisteria Island Inc. when the island was sold to FEB in 1967. In 1972 the island was transferred from FEB to the Bernstein family, who still call it their property today. To this day, the island is still uninhabited despite many attempts to colonize it. There is currently a plan for the construction of a housing estate.
