The Archdiocese of Pontianak ( Latin Archidioecesis Pontianakensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Pontianak , Indonesia .

history

Pope Innocent XII. tried on January 16, 1692 to found the Apostolic Vicariate Borneo . The mission was unsuccessful because the Sultan of Banjarmasin forbade all foreigners from entering the country. Pius X founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Borneo on February 11, 1905 from cessions of territory from the Apostolic Prefecture of Batavia .

With the Apostolic Constitution Quae catholico nomini it was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate on March 13, 1918 and on May 21, 1938, it was named, Apostolic Vicariate Pontianak . On January 3, 1961, it was raised to the rank of metropolitan archbishopric.

It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
