Banjarmasin is the capital of the province of South Kalimantan , Indonesia , with 627,245 inhabitants (2008). The city is located on a delta island near the confluence of the Barito and Martapura rivers . That is why the place is also called "River City".

The place has an important deep water port from which pepper , coal , petroleum products , gold , diamonds , etc. are exported. Also there are coal mines and oil refineries in the city environment. The city is regularly visited by floods ravaged and flooded.

The city is the seat of the State University of Lambung Mangkurat (UNLAM).

history

In the 14th century the place was part of the Hindu kingdom of Majapahit ; later the empire was conquered by Muslims. The Dutch started their trade in 1606. After that, the British controlled the city ​​for some time, and in 1787 the city became a Dutch protectorate until independence from Indonesia .
