The Archdiocese of Samarinda ( Latin Archidioecesis Samarindaensis , Indonesian Keuskupan Agung Samarinda ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Samarinda in Indonesia .
history
Pope Pius XII founded the Apostolic Vicariate on February 21, 1955 from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Banjarmasin . On January 3, 1961, it was raised to the rank of diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Pontianak as a suffragan diocese.
It lost part of its territory on January 9, 2002 in favor of the establishment of the Tanjung Selor diocese . On January 29, 2003, it was raised to the rank of Metropolitan Archdiocese.
