The Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu ( Latin Archidioecesis Kotakinabaluensis ) is in Malaysia located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Kota Kinabalu .
history
Pope Innocent XII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Borneo on January 16, 1692. The mission and the attempt were unsuccessful because the Sultan of Banjarmasin forbade all foreigners to penetrate inland. Pius IX founded the Apostolic Prefecture Labuan and Borneo on September 4, 1855 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of Batavia .
On February 5, 1927, it took the name, North Borneo Apostolic Prefecture . On February 14, 1952, she was promoted to the Vicariate Apostolic Office and took the name, Vicariate Apostolic Jesselton . On March 22, 1968, it took on its current name. Elevated to the diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Kuching as a suffragan, it was raised on May 31, 1976. It was raised to the rank of Metropolitan Archdiocese on May 23, 2008.
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- February 5, 1927 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Sarawak ;
- December 17, 1992 to the Diocese of Keningau ;
- July 16, 2007 to the diocese of Sandakan .
