Fiorenzo Cardinal Angelini (born August 1, 1916 in Rome ; † November 22, 2014 there ) was a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying philosophical and theological studies, Fiorenzo Angelini was ordained a priest on February 3, 1940 and then worked for five years in parish pastoral care before becoming ecclesiastical advisor to Catholic Action for all of Italy from 1945 to 1947 . From 1947 to 1954 he held the office of papal ceremonial .

In 1956 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Messene and entrusted him with responsibility for the hospital chaplaincy in Rome. The episcopal ordination received his Giuseppe Cardinal Pizzardo in the Roman Church Sant'ignazio Church, Rome ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Luigi Traglia and Bishop Ismaele Mario Castellano . The conservative Angelini has since been considered one of the most controversial men in the curia . He allied himself with political right-wing parties in order to exclude the communists. From 1977 to 1985 Fiorenzo Angelini also worked as auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Rome . 1985 Pope named him John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop and President of the Pontifical Commission for the pastoral care of the people in medical professions .

Fiorenzo Angelini belonged since 1991 as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonie Santo Spirito in Sassia the College of Cardinals and in 2002 while retaining its title Diakonie to Cardinal Priest pro hac vice levied. In 1996 John Paul II accepted Angelini's resignation after he had already turned 80. In 1997 he was the founding president of the International Institute for Research on the Face of Christ (Istituto internazionale di ricerca sul Volto di Cristo).

Fiorenzo Angelini was the Council Father of all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was involved in the liturgy of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. At the 2005 and 2013 conclave , he was no longer eligible to vote because of his age. He is the author of numerous publications on the pastoral care of the sick and has played a decisive role in setting up several health centers and clinics worldwide.

Pope Benedict XVI In 2006, in a letter to Cardinal Angelini, honored his work and services. Because of his dealings with the medical profession and pharmaceutical companies, he was nicknamed “Richelieu of Medicine” or “ Sua Sanità ” (German: “Your Health”) and “Minister of Health of the Holy See”. He was a personal friend of Giulio Andreotti , with whom he grew up.
