Of Truth and Sacrifice is the title of the ninth studio album by the German metalcore / melodic death metal band Heaven Shall Burn from Saalfeld in Thuringia . It was released on March 21, 2020 via the German label Century Media .
The work is a double album , which has a total of 19 tracks. Of Truth and Sacrifice is one hour 37 minutes and 33 seconds long. The album is divided into the sections Of Truth and Of Sacrifice .
Four singles were released for the album. Three of them came out in advance, one two days after the album was released. Of Truth and Sacrifice is the group's first album, which was able to enter the German album charts at number one , after the three previous releases landed in the top 10 with positions two, three and nine. Of Truth and Sacrifice also reached listings in the Austrian , Swiss , Belgian and Spanish album charts.
Emergence
As early as July 2019, the musicians published pictures from the studio, which the members show when they are first working on the new album. The album was officially announced by the band for March 2020 on December 21, 2019. In this announcement the album title as well as the title list of the work was announced. The group also announced that Of Truth and Sacrifice will be a double album , the content of which is divided into two sections. The album cover was designed by Eliran Kantor , who already designed the artwork for the predecessor Wanderer from 2016.
The album was produced by Alexander Dietz and Maik Weichert in Dietz's home studio. The film My Green Heart in Dark Times documents the creation and production process of the album.

On January 10, 2020, the group released their first two singles for the album. These are called Weakness Leaving My Heart and Protector . The two pieces were released in a joint music video with a playing time of 13 minutes. The third single, My Heart and the Ocean , was released on February 7, 2020 . To this end, the group worked with active members of the Sea Shepherd organization who campaign against the destruction of the oceans . A music video for the song Eradicate was released on March 6, 2020 . For this, the band worked with the director Isaac Nabwana from Uganda . The collaboration came about by chance.
The album itself was released on March 20, 2020 in different versions: As a simple double CD or double record as well as a limited version, which also includes a DVD with the film My green heart in dark times , an environmentally friendly cloth bag, a few earplugs , a patch and a seed bomb included .
On the day the album was released, the fourth music video appeared with overwhelming power.

With the exception of Critical Mass , all songs were written by Heaven Shall Burn. Critical Mass is a cover version of the 1989 song by Nuclear Assault .

Of Truth and Sacrifice is the group's first album, which was able to position itself at number one , after the three predecessors Invictus at number nine, Veto at number two and Wanderer at number three each achieved a top 10 ranking. In the last two days, a competition broke out between Heaven Shall Burn and the pop singer Pietro Lombardi , whose album Lombardi was released on the same day and took second place in the midweek album charts. Lombardi said in an Instagram video that "some rock group out of nowhere" was taking first place for him and asked his fans to buy and stream his album to win number one. The group recorded this video and shared it on social networks. The contest was gradually taken up by the press. On the day the chart was released, Heaven Shall Burn finally took first place in the album charts.
“We are really very happy that it finally worked out -" out of nowhere "- with pole position. Respect also to Pietro, who turned out to be a great guy and was a fair sportsman. Despite all the joy, one should not forget that there are currently more important things. The album debuted in Austria on April 3, 2020 at number four and in Switzerland at number six. In Spain Heaven Shall Burn landed her first chart entry with her album at number 25. In the Belgian region of Flanders , the album reached number 157 and was listed as the third album after Veto and Wanderer. The album also entered the charts in Japan .
Meetings
Of Truth and Sacrifice received mostly positive feedback in the German-language press. In Metal Hammer the double album was voted "Album of the Month". The accompanying review stated that the group managed to maintain the energy, anger and intensity throughout the album. Furthermore, the critic wrote that the genre Metalcore no longer applies to Heaven Shall Burn, as the group takes influences from numerous other musical styles such as Gothic Metal , Hardcore , Death Metal à la Bolt Thrower , EDM , Black - and Thrash Metal . The use of an orchestra in various songs on the album gives the album an additional depth and heaviness. Michael Klaas from Metal.de found that the group did not skimp on heaviness and their typical socially or politically critical texts. The guitar riffs , according to Klaas, have “a lot of flesh around their ribs” while the filigree melodies dance “around the eruptions like the licking flames of a fire”. In his conclusion, the reviewer states that Heaven Shall Burn take advantage of the entire length of the double album, let off steam and underpin their pioneering role, whereby they do not exceed the expectations of the critic but meet with flying colors.
According to Yan Vogel, who discussed the album for the online magazine Laut.de , the group does not fight the fight for the so-called truth in a striking way, but rather fix it with examples. The play Tirpitz , for example, takes up the gigantism of National Socialism . Outlawed journalists or the commitment to refugees are also sung about. Compared to their two predecessors, Veto and Wanderer, with their DIY mentality and a lot of passion, the band adds a bit of variety. Oliver Uschmann from Rock Hard was enthusiastic about the work and described the piece Protector as a “great moment in metal history, in terms of structure, arrangement and quality of emotional incitement” and describes this as a “ blueprint for future generations.” Timon Krause from the online magazine Powermetal.de describes the album as a “masterpiece” or a “milestone of Melodic Death Metal ”, even if he is bored with pieces like Tirpitz and the constant take-up of the Second World War . He also found that he had no idea what potential metalcore could have for development .
