Minab ( Persian ميناب, Mīnāb ) is the capital of the Minab district in the Hormozgan Province in Iran . 73,170 people live there (2016).

Minab is not far from Bandar Abbas . It is known for fishing (especially shrimp) and for agriculture (especially date palms and mangoes ). It is located on the official main road between Bandar Abbas, Makran and the Balochistan Province .

In ancient times , Minab was called Harmosia (or Harmozeia ).

Population and languages

The population consists mainly of Shiite Muslims , but there is a Sunni minority. People at home speak Minabi , a Persian dialect related to Bandari. There are also minorities who speak Baluch , Arabic , Swahili or a Turkic language.

Attractions

Once a week, a well-known bazaar called Panjshambe Bazar, or in Minabi pronunciation Peyshambe Bazar (“Thursday Market”) attracts people from all over Hormozgan and beyond.

There is also a castle and an old town. Minab is known for fabric brands.
