The Big Day Out was an annual festival tour of Australia and New Zealand . The musical focus on the various stages was on rock music and electronic sounds . The festival made stops in Sydney , Gold Coast , Melbourne , Perth , Adelaide and Auckland ; The event was scheduled in January or February, i.e. in the oceanic summer.

The first event in 1992 took place only in Sydney, among the bands were the Violent Femmes and Nirvana . In the following years the other tour locations were added, since 1996 the six named. A low point in the history of the tour is a performance by the band Limp Bizkit in 2001 in Sydney, in which a teenage girl was crushed in front of the stage. The security concept was improved in the following years.

For some years now, a compilation series has also been released on CD, on which the bands participating in the tour are represented.
