Calcium Kid is a British film comedy by Alex De Rakoff from the year 2004 .

action

Jimmy Connelly is a milkman. And he loves his job, just like boxing. For years hardened by extra calcium, he defeated Pete Wright one day in training. He is actually in the process of preparing for the battle of the century against the middleweight world champion, Jose Mendez. The victory-oriented trainer Herbie Bush is now desperately trying to turn naive Jimmy into a new boxing star named Jimmy "Calcium Kid" Connelly - the new challenger for world champion Jose Mendez. But the well-behaved, sheltered boy is not up to the tough business and after a short time stands before the shards of his existence.

In the run-up to the fight with Mendez, Jimmy has to attend a press conference. Coach Bush recommends that he speak to Mendez about the fight and provoke a little, which in the end goes backwards. After Jimmy realizes the damage Bush has done, he unceremoniously calls off the fight and withdraws. Bush and the training team look for Jimmy and find him while he's cleaning his old milk truck. In the end, Jimmy can be persuaded to take part in the fight again.

In the locker room, minutes before the fight, when Jimmy and his team go backstage, the humiliated Wright suddenly appears with a rifle. He takes those present, including the camera team that is currently working, hostage and brings them into a room. He already forces Jimmy to fight against Mendez, whom he has also taken hostage. With the camera running, Jimmy starts boxing, but is soon hit hard by Mendez. Taking advantage of this moment, Jimmy defends himself against the hostage taker, but the latter first hits him in the head with the butt of the rifle and then shoots Mendez. Jimmy is now supposed to pray for his life, whereupon Jimmy Wright can knock down and defeat with a well-aimed punch.

With the film crew recording, Jimmy becomes a hero not only in his hometown but across the UK.

criticism

Kino.de assessed: “Primarily because of Orlando Bloom and not because of the decreasing joke density towards the end of the interesting mockumentary about the boxing biz, which is only partially original between“ Rocky ”and historical figures like Muhammad Ali. The rhythm and timing achieved in the dry Brit style fit perfectly, but with the accelerated speed of the It-Gets-Getting-Worse-Carousel, gags become a cynicism revue that is increasingly distancing itself from its main character and thus remains below its possibilities. "

The Internet platform Rotten Tomatoes did not receive any positive reviews from five of its reviews. In the Internet Movie Database , users have so far rated the film with 5.6 out of 10 stars (as of April 2018). The lexicon of international films judged that the film was convincing in terms of timing, but lacked humor. The film magazine Cinema came to the same conclusion, but it also wrote: “'Troy' hero Orlando Bloom plays the underdog with boyish charm”.
