The Schlagermove is a Schlager festival that has been held every July in Hamburg-St. Pauli takes place and is considered the largest such event in Germany. Since 1997, over seven million visitors have celebrated the Schlagermove. In addition, the so-called S-Move Parties (Schlagermove Parties) take place throughout Germany . Similar events have also taken place in other German cities such as Essen , Dortmund and Hanover since 2004 , sometimes under the name Schlagerparade .

Hamburg

Origin and process

The summer of 1997 is considered to be the hour of birth of the Schlagermove. While there were around 50,000 visitors in Hamburg at that time, up to 600,000 people reportedly celebrated in the following years. According to the organizers, the 20th Schlagermove in 2016 had 370,000 participants, although independent figures on the participants are not available. The event in Hamburg takes place on a weekend in July. In the afternoon, almost 50 trucks with large music systems and dancing Schlager fans drive through St. Pauli, also on Hafenstrasse and the Reeperbahn , and fill the district with pop music . Many visitors dress up in the style of the 1970s, wearing bell-bottoms , brightly colored, flashy clothes, oversized sunglasses or wigs. In addition to the parade in the afternoon (similar to the Love Parade ) in the evening, there is the so-called aftermove on the Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli, where renowned pop artists such as Michael Holm or Bata Illic perform. The Schlagermove was moderated by NDR moderators such as Carlo von Tiedemann and Norman Hild. A special feature in several years was the so-called samba train, which runs as a train with two dance cars from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony to Hamburg.

Due to the ban on major events during the COVID-19 pandemic , the Schlagermove 2020 was canceled .

Aftermove

In the evening, numerous nationally and internationally known pop musicians perform on the Hamburg Heiligengeistfeld . Several party tents (formerly also a large open-air stage) are available for this. In 2006 there were a total of five tents, of which tent 3 was the largest with 1500 m². Friedel von Hagen was a “regular guest” in the aftermove tents . In addition, old and new hits like Bata Illic, Jörg Bausch and Michael Wendler appear. Admission to the Aftermove is free on Fridays, and there is a charge on Saturdays.

Award ceremony

In 2002, the “GrandPril” competition for young musicians was held for the first time on one of the main stages. The main prize is the "Golden Prilblume ", an award for the best and weirdest hit band in Germany. The Saarland band “ Die Barmherzigen Plateausohlen ” won the award after a decision by the audience and the jury.

criticism

There is criticism of the Schlagermove from residents who see the Ballermannisation of their district because of the high number of participants and their legacies in the Schlagermove . In addition, there is a burden from other events in the Hamburg-St. Pauli. In 2018, plans were announced by individual parliamentary groups in the Hamburg district council concerned not to approve the 22nd Schlagermove. Nevertheless, the event took place with 400,000 participants. For the Schlagermove in 2019, the authorities issued the organizers with stricter requirements, such as more toilets, stewards and cleaning teams, in order to keep the burden on the residents as low as possible.

Other cities

In 2004 the Schlagermove also took place once in Essen . In 2007 it was supposed to take place in Cologne for the first time , but negotiations with the city failed. The first Schlagermove event took place in Hanover in 2007 with around 75,000 visitors, which was known there as the Schlagerparade. The second event of this kind took place in 2008 with twelve music trucks. The cars pulled from Schützenplatz Hanover through the city to open-air stages in the Steintorviertel and in front of the New Town Hall , where pop singers such as Jürgen Drews and Antonia performed. According to the organizers, participation is said to have been 50,000 people, the police estimates were significantly lower. In 2010, the organizers spoke of a total of 40,000 participants, 6,000 of whom were at the evening event. The police, however, estimated the number of those involved in the move to only 5000 people.
