The non-profit organization diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid , as an umbrella association, unites people with diabetes and professional groups who deal with diabetes. This includes doctors and scientists, diabetes advisors, psychologists and podiatrists . The organization was founded on the initiative of the German Diabetes Society (DDG) and the Association of Diabetes Advisory and Training Professions in Germany (VDBD). Since June 8, 2012, the German Diabetes Aid - People with Diabetes (DDH-M) has represented the patient column in diabetesDE.

The diabetes organizations in the USA ( American Diabetes Association , ADA) and Great Britain ( diabetes UK ) serve as a model for the association .

history

The association was founded in October 2008 by the German Diabetes Society (DDG) and the Association of Diabetes Advice and Training Professions (VDBD). The founding managing director was Dietrich Garlichs , and Nicole Mattig-Fabian is currently managing the company. The federal office has been based in Berlin since 2009. From there the tasks and actions of diabetesDE are coordinated. This includes education and information about the disease, its consequences and a healthy lifestyle, as well as the development of strategies for better prevention , early detection and care for people with diabetes. In May 2010, for example, the association organized a demonstration in front of the Federal Ministry of Health and, in June 2010, raised awareness of the disease with a blood sugar measurement campaign with Eckart von Hirschhausen and politicians. The non-profit organization has hosted the central event for the annual World Diabetes Day in Germany since 2009.

In December 2010 the association initiated the merger of nine German health-oriented non-governmental organizations to form the “National Alliance against Noncommunicable Diseases”. Since October 2009 the organization has been a full member of the " International Diabetes Federation " (IDF). In September 2011 it was the only European member organization of the IDF to be accredited for the first UN summit against noncommunicable diseases in New York. diabetesDE has been registered in the transparency register of the European Commission since 2011.

On May 16, 2012, the association changed its name to diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid - at a delegates' meeting in Stuttgart .

With the establishment of an independent nationwide patient organization Deutsche Diabetes-Hilfe - Menschen mit Diabetes (DDH-M) on June 8, 2012, the association strengthened and institutionalized its previous patient column. DDH-M currently has four regional associations: Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and North (Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).

Goals and demands

In addition to fundamentally better primary prevention, for example through kindergartens and schools, the association calls for the introduction of clear food labeling . Together with other organizations, diabetesDE - German Diabetes Aid is committed to clear labeling of nutritional information on food.

In addition, the organization is committed to the introduction of a national diabetes plan. So far, 13 out of 27 EU countries have a parliament or government plan. Germany doesn't have it yet. It should contain:

  • the implementation of existing preventive measures;
  • the development of improved and individual prevention programs;
  • the establishment of primary prevention in childhood;
  • the more effective treatment of diabetes;
  • research into the causes and therapy of diabetes mellitus.

the association is politically active to represent the interests of people with diabetes among decision-makers. This includes contacts with parliamentarians, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Consumers.

the association also represents Germany in the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

Organs of society

The organs of the association are the assembly of delegates and the board.

The delegates are made up of those affected, those interested, doctors, scientists, advisors and practitioners. They meet once a year and are elected for four years each. Your task is, among other things, the election and control of the board of directors, the resolution on applications and the discussion of the future strategy of the association.

The board of directors is led by the chairman Thomas Danne. His deputies are the medical pedagogue and diabetes advisor Nicola Haller and the diabetologist Christian Berg.

Events and publications

The association promotes its own cause through public events, for example at the World Diabetes Day in Berlin on November 14th, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In November 2011, diabetesDE held the first annual donation gala with the award of the “Thomas Fuchsberger Prize” in Berlin. In addition to announcements for the press, the non-profit organization publishes the German Diabetes Health Report every year.
