Māris Verpakovskis (born October 15, 1979 in Liepāja ) is a former Latvian football player and current football club president.

The striker is the record scorer for the Latvian national team . In 2014 he ended his active career and is currently president of the newly founded club FK Liepāja .

Career

Verpakovskis began his career with Baltika Liepāja. He made his debut in the first Latvian league in 1997 at FK Liepājas Metalurgs , where he scored nine goals in four years in 59 games, back then as a midfielder.

In 2001 he moved to Skonto Riga , where he won three championship titles in a row. He scored 41 goals in 77 games. At the end of 2003, Verpakovskis moved to Dynamo Kiev in the Ukrainian league, although he u. a. There were also offers from the English Premier League . In the same year he was voted Latvian Footballer of the Year . In his first season with Kiev, he scored three goals in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League and was again Latvia's Footballer of the Year. In the winter break of the 2006/2007 season he was loaned to the Spanish first division club Getafe for half a year, but did not really get a chance there. He then moved again this time on loan to Hajduk Split in the Croatian league. There he was able to establish himself quickly and scored five goals in his first 18 games until he picked up an injury in early 2008 that prevented him from playing for Hajduk again in the next six months. Also in the 2008/09 season Verpakovskis was awarded by Kiev to Celta Vigo . In 2009 he moved to Ergotelis .

With the Latvian national soccer team Verpakovskis took part in the 2004 European Championship in Portugal. There he scored the first and so far last Latvian goal in the finals of an international competition in the first group match against the Czech Republic .

In qualifying for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , Verpakovskis scored as many goals in six games. He became a national hero when he scored the equalizer in the second playoff game against Turkey on November 19 (one day after Latvian Independence Day) to make it 2-2, which was equivalent to participating in the finals in Portugal. In the first leg in Riga , Verpakovskis scored the only goal of the game to make Latvia 1-0 win. He made his debut for Latvia in June 1999 against Greece , where he scored the only goal of the game.

Verpakovskis has two children. His first marriage was to Baiba Seska, the daughter of the mayor of Liepāja. In September 2013 he married Alisa Elksne.
