Le Classique
As Le Classique ( German Der Klassiker , also known as Derby de France or Le Classico ) are the derbies between the French football clubs Paris Saint-Germain (short: PSG or Paris SG ) from the capital Paris and Olympique Marseille (short: OM ) the southern port city of Marseille on the Mediterranean Sea . The name is based on the duels between the two Spanish top clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona , which are called El Clásico .
history
Olympique Marseille
Olympique Marseille was founded in 1899. In 1932, Marseille was one of the 20 founding members of Division 1. They are nicknamed Les Phocéens ( German The Phoenicians ). The first championship in Division 1 won OM 1937 due to a better goal difference against FC Sochaux . In the same year the Stade Vélodrome was inaugurated. After its renovation and expansion to 60,000 seats for the 1998 World Cup , the venue is now the largest stadium in the French league. After two second places in the following years 1938 and 1939 , the Second World War interrupted the play of the top division. After the World War, Olympique Marseille was able to retract the second championship title in 1948 . There followed changeable years in which the whites and blue shuttled between midfield and the lower part of the table.
In 1959 , Marseille was the last founding member of Division 1 to make its way into the dual class. After a brief return in 1962 , OM was able to establish itself again in the French football club in the mid-1960s. After winning the Cup in 1969 and a second place in the league in 1970 , Olympique was able to register a third and fourth time in the list of winners in Division 1 in 1971 and 1972 . The Yugoslav striker Josip Skoblar in the championship season scored 44 goals in 1970/71. A best performance that continues to this day in the top French league and he also received the Golden Shoe as the top goalscorer of the year in Europe. With the success in the Coupe de France in 1972 , the club managed the double . Another cup win in 1976 followed in the 1970s . After that, the club slipped back into mediocrity and in 1980 , relegation followed. After returning in 1984 , the Marseillais were able to narrowly prevent relegation with 17th place.
The southern French rose steeply when the businessman and politician Bernard Tapie took over the presidency in 1986. In the following seasons, the club signed German internationals Rudi Völler , Karlheinz Förster and Klaus Allofs . Furthermore, from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Éric Cantona , Jean-Pierre Papin , Abédi Pelé , Chris Waddle , Marcel Desailly , Jean Tigana , Alain Giresse , Enzo Francescoli , Didier Deschamps , Fabien Barthez , Alen Bokšić and Basile Boli the jersey of Olympique. The sporting success was not long in coming. In 1989 the second double was won with the championship and the cup victory . When Division 1 won the title, a series of four championships ( 1989 , 1990 , 1991 and 1992 ) began in a row. The highlight was the 1993 UEFA Champions League win against AC Milan (1-0). Before that, they failed in the final of the European Cup in 1991 on penalties (3: 5) against Red Star Belgrade .
After the greatest success came the crash. The championship title in 1993 was stripped of OM because of the "OM-VA affair" , match manipulation through bribes. In addition, Marseille was transferred to Division 2 for the 1994/95 season . But this was only a short guest appearance and the direct rise was successful. In the 2010s, OM found its way back on the road to success. In 2010 the Phocéens were able to celebrate their ninth championship title after a lean period of 17 years. There were also three wins of the Coupe de la Ligue in 2010, 2011 and 2012 as well as the Trophée des Champions in 2010 and 2011 .
Paris Saint-Germain
The Paris Saint-Germain Football Club was created in 1970 from the suburban club Stade Saint-Germain after a merger with Paris FC . Paris Saint-Germain welcomes its opponents in the Parc des Princes in the 16th arrondissement of the city, which has existed since 1897 . After Paris Saint-Germain took the place of Stade Saint-Germain in Division 2 , the newcomer to the league in 1971 achieved immediate promotion to Division 1 . After a 16th place in the first 1971/72 season , the club lost its license because it violated the rules of the FFF football association . Accordingly, departments for amateur and youth teams had to be available in every professional club. Paris Saint-Germain was downgraded to the third amateur league and Paris FC took over the place in Division 1. At the same time, the squad switched from PSG to PFC.
From 1973 the fashion designer Daniel Hechter became involved as a sponsor and in 1974 became the club's president for four years. Under the direction of coach Just Fontaine , the most successful goalscorer of the 1958 World Cup with 13 goals, the Parisiens reported back to the French football club as early as the 1974/75 season . After average years in the 1970s, the Rouges et Bleus celebrated their first successes in the early 1980s by winning the Coupe de France in 1982 and 1983 . The preliminary highlight was winning the championship in the 1985/86 season . Under the direction of coach Gérard Houllier and goalkeeper Joël Bats , midfielders Luis Fernández and Safet Sušić and striker Dominique Rocheteau , the club remained unbeaten until matchday 20 and ended the season with a three point lead over FC Nantes .
The capital city's most successful period so far was in the 1990s. 1991 took over the Pay TV transmitter Canal + the club. The second championship in 1994 won the Red Blue with coach Artur Jorge and the national goalkeeper Bernard Lama , the goal-scoring midfielder Raí and David Ginola and George Weah , the Liberian FIFA world player from 1995. Furthermore, the cup competition Coupe de France in 1993 , 1995 and 1998 went on the account of the Parisians. In the League Cup , as in the game for the French Supercup in 1995 and 1998, they were successful. At the European level, PSG celebrated winning the European Cup Winners' Cup against Rapid Vienna in 1996, as well as participating in the final again the following year. There they lost 1-0 to FC Barcelona . PSG are the youngest club to win a European Cup.
Paris Saint-Germain remained successful in the following years, albeit without a championship title. The previous collection of titles included three more cup wins in 2004 , 2006 , 2010 and a league cup triumph in 2008. In 2001 you emerged as one of three winners in the UI Cup . Since May 2011 the Qatari investor group Qatar Sport Investment (QSI) has held 70% of the shares in Paris Saint-Germain. With the new donors in the back, multi-million dollar player transfers were made for the 2011/12 Ligue 1 season . The Argentine Javier Pastore came from Palermo for 42 million euros . Local national players Jérémy Ménez , Kevin Gameiro , Blaise Matuidi as well as Malians Mohamed Sissoko , Maxwell and Thiago Motta also moved to the city on the Seine . Despite the first place in the league, Carlo Ancelotti replaced Antoine Kombouaré in the coaching bench at the end of December 2011 . At the end of the season, the player commitments of the capital city borne fruit. After a hard-fought season they were left behind against the surprise champions HSC Montpellier , who celebrated their first championship.
Further reinforcements were committed for the 2012/13 season . The Swedish star striker Zlatan Ibrahimović came in a package with the Brazilian defender Thiago Silva for 62 million euros from AC Milan . Then there were Ezequiel Lavezzi for around 30 million euros from SSC Napoli and Lucas for around 43 million euros from São Paulo FC . These high transfer expenses bore fruit this time, Paris Saint-Germain won the French championship four times in a row between 2013 and 2016.
rivalry
In contrast to other traditional European derbies such as the Glasgow Old Firm , the Manchester Derby , the Derby della Capitale in Rome or the inner-French one between AS Saint-Étienne and Olympique Lyon , the duel between PSG and OM looks back on a relatively short period of time. In contrast, it has now become the most problematic duel in the country. Unlike other derbies, the duel does not draw its explosiveness from its geographical proximity, as in the Revierderby Dortmund against Schalke or the Frankenderby Nuremberg against Fürth , but from the fact that Paris and Marseille are the largest cities and OM and PSG are the most popular and influential football clubs in France are. The two clubs are so far the only French winners of a major European competition (OM 1993 and PSG 1996 ). The rivalry between the two cities is not only related to football, but also on a historical, cultural and social level. The cosmopolitan city of Paris in the north of centralized France, which puts all other cities in the shade, against the port city of Marseille located around 800 km to the south in the sunny south on the Mediterranean bay of Golfe du Lion . In the Ligue 1 season 2011/12 , Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille took first and second place in the audience table with an average of 42,882 and 40,445 spectators respectively. On the other places were Olympique Lyon (33,067), AS Saint-Étienne (21,478), FC Toulouse (21,446) and Stade Rennes (20,725).
The first encounter took place on December 12, 1971 on the 18th matchday of Division 1 1971/72 . There Olympique retained the upper hand with a 4-2 in the domestic Stade Vélodrome. Paris was able to record the highest derby victory for itself. On January 8, 1978, the team from Marseille had taken a 1-0 lead, but in the end they were clearly inferior to Paris in their 5-1 defeat. At that time, however, it was not yet possible to speak of a derby. The clashes were without much rivalry until the 1980s . This changed when Paris Saint-Germain saw the first successes and Bernand Tapie became president of the Phocéens . Marseille's competitors AS Saint-Étienne (1970s) and Girondins Bordeaux (1980s) weakened and a new point of friction emerged with the Parisians . For journalist and author Alain Pécheral, this opposition between the fans is also partly artificially created, with the late 1980s the TV station and PSG sponsor Canal + and OM's President Tapie - as both sides later admitted - the interest in the encounters between the two Wanted to "heat up" teams.
The first high point in the encounters came at the end of the 1980s. Shortly before the end of the season on matchday 35, 1988/89 , they met on points in Marseille. Up to the 90th minute they were 0-0, then Franck Sauzée marked the redeeming 1-0 for Olympique with a placed 30-meter long shot. Paris could not make up for this deficit in the three outstanding games and OM celebrated a championship again after 17 years. The takeover of PSG in 1991 by Canal + with owner Michel Denisot and later club president fueled the opposition between OM and PSG. The superiority of the southern French should be broken with high investments in the team. PSG coach Artur Jorge gave an interview before the first leg of the 1992/93 season in Paris. There he announced: "We will beat them." In response, OM President Tapie posted the newspaper article in question in the crew's cabin. The desired effect was not lacking. The Marseillais won the first and second leg and were champions at the end of the season ahead of Paris. In the following season 1993/94 , the red-blue series champions replaced Marseille as the title holder with eight points. In the following years, both clubs in the league had to be content with top places and, as runners-up, they had to give way to other teams such as AJ Auxerre , AS Monaco and Girondins Bordeaux . In the 2000s, OM and PSG went through changeable years and series champions Olympique Lyon ( 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 and 2008 ) drew solitary circles at the top of the Ligue 1 table .
Since the mid-1990s, the derby has repeatedly been overshadowed by violent riots among fan groups. A sad climax in the history of the Classique occurred on February 28, 2010. A PSG fan named Yann L. fell into a coma with severe head injuries from being hit and kicked by PSG supporters of a rival fan group . Another 20 people were arrested during the riot. On March 18, 2010, Yann L. succumbed to his injuries. Four people were arrested in connection with the death of Yann L. As a consequence, the club did not sell any tickets for away games until further notice.
Because of the violent clashes in the past, only 400 supporters from Paris were allowed to travel to the league game on October 7, 2012 in Marseille. There were specially separated areas in the stadium. Other supporters got a travel ban for the Paris to Marseille route for the match day.
Incidents
The fans of the clubs made for inglorious chapters of the Derby de France . At the 1995 Cup semi-final on April 11th, 146 arrests and nine police officers were injured after rioting.
Other incidents have occurred in recent years.

statistics
Game statistics
Overall, the balance is balanced. But while Olympique Marseille won the majority of the league games, there was little for them to win in the cup competitions against Paris Saint-Germain. Of the 14 games in the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophée des Champions, Les Phocéens could only book one on their account.

At the top of the list of goalscorers are the Swede Zlatan Ibrahimović (2012 to 2016 at PSG) and the Portuguese Pauleta (2003 to 2008 at PSG). They are followed with five goals by attacker Hervé Florès (1975 to 1981 at Olympique). Rudi Völler is the only German on the list with two goals.

Despite the competition between the clubs and the short history of the Parisiens , a relatively large number of players were under contract with both clubs. 23 of the 47 players switched directly between the clubs. The first deserters were Jean-Pierre Destrumelle and Jean Djorkaeff , father of Youri Djorkaeff , who moved to the capital in the year it was founded. The former Yugoslav national player Tomislav Ivić was responsible for both clubs (PSG 1988-1990, OM 1991 and 2001) as a coach. As a former PSG player (1979-1981), the Brazilian defender Abel Braga took over as coach of the Marseillais in 2000 .

Women's soccer
Since the mid-2010s, the duels between the women's teams of the two clubs have occasionally been referred to as Le Classique , although the term does not actually apply because these clashes cannot look back on a longer tradition. Because in the 18 years from 1974/75 to 1991/92, in which the French championship was still played in a mixture of league and knockout mode , there was never a direct comparison. And since a national first division was set up in the 1992/93 season , PSG and OM have only been represented in it together in three seasons. This was the case for the first time in 2016/17 , then in the following season and most recently in 2019/20 . The capital club won all home (1: 0, 4: 0, 11: 0) and two of the three away games (5: 2, 5: 0); only in 2016/17 Marseille retained the upper hand in front of their own audience (2-0).
In the state cup competition , the two opponents have never met up to and including 2019/20.
