Laurent Batlles (born September 23, 1975 in Nantes ) is a former French football player .

Career

Laurent Batlles began his career in the youth department of Toulouse FC . The midfielder completed his first competitive games in the top French division in the 1993/94 season, when he played a total of five games. After relegation to the second division 2 could no longer be avoided at the end of the season , Batlles received more match practice at Toulouse. In his third season he finally established himself in the team when he played 37 games and contributed four goals. For the 1997/98 season, he was promoted back to the top division. After two more years at Toulouse, in which the midfielder was always a regular player, he moved to league rivals Girondins Bordeaux in 1999 . There, too, he immediately made the leap into the regular formation and played for the first time on the international stage in the same season, when he appeared in eight UEFA Champions League games and also scored a goal.

In the following two years he was active in both the French championship and the European cup competition. Batlles played 14 games in the UEFA Cup and scored one goal for Bordeaux, but could not record any notable successes with the team, as Girondins Bordeaux failed in the round of 16 against Spanish representative Rayo Vallecano in the 2000/01 season and the following year in the third round against Roda JC Kerkrade . In January 2002 he signed a contract with Stade Rennes . A year later he changed clubs again and joined SC Bastia . The midfielder made a total of 19 games for Bastia in the 2002/03 season and scored four goals. After a few months he left the club and signed with Olympique Marseille . With Marseille he managed to celebrate some major successes in the UEFA Cup . In the round of 16, Liverpool FC, one of the favorites to win the title, was defeated, in the quarter-finals Inter Milan managed to eliminate and in the semi-finals, Newcastle United , an English representative, was again thrown out of the competition.

In the final game Batlles faced Valencia CF with Marseille and lost the game 2-0, which meant that the trophy was not achieved. The following season he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup . In the summer of 2005, the midfielder returned to Toulouse after six years. He managed to establish himself again as an important part of the team and to keep the league with the team. In the summer of 2008 he finally moved to the newly promoted Grenoble Foot and signed a two-year contract with an option for another year. In the 2008/09 season he succeeded in 13th place in the league with Grenoble. He completed 36 games in Ligue 1 , but remained without a goal.

After the relegation of Grenoble at the end of the 2009/10 season in the second-class Ligue 2 , his contract was not extended. Shortly thereafter, the midfielder signed a one-year contract with AS Saint-Étienne . In 2012 he ended his active career and was hired as a talent scout by his previous club, Saint-Étienne.
