During the eight years completed 42 league games before moving to the club Vasco da Gama in 1976 . From 1976 to 1979 he was under contract for the club, in 1977 he was loaned to Las Vegas Quicksilvers for eleven league games . In 1978 he took part in a game with the Brazilian national soccer team. His last station as a football player was the Goytacaz Futebol Clube club in 1985 , he was under contract from 1984 to 1985.

Coaching career

After his active career, he got a contract as a coach for the club immediately after the end of his career. In 1988 the club Internacional Porto Alegre was runner-up at the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , which he coached. In the 1990/91 season the club did not achieve such good results, but was able to hold out in the first division. In the second half of 1990/91 he moved to the club Belenenses Lisbon . Like the club Internacional, the club Belenenses was also in the second division and was able to return to the first division through his coaching. He was promised an extension of the contract for 1992/93, but turned his back on the club shortly before the end. His next stop was the EC Vitória association .

After five years in Portugal, he went back to Brazil. In 1995 he signed a contract with the CR Vasco da Gama club , but was terminated after a short time. From 1997 to 2000 he was with the three big clubs from Paraná ( Athletico Paranaense , Coritiba FC and Paraná Clube ) under contract. After four years he returned to the CR Vasco da Gama association. After the FIFA Club World Cup , the CR Vasco da Gama club got into a difficult time and asked Abel to return. After a few months, he received an offer from the French club Olympique Marseille in 2000 , but returned to Brazil in 2001. In 2001 he coached the Botafogo FR club and the Atlético Mineiro club for the second time . In 2003 he took over the club AA Ponte Preta in order to keep it in the first division until the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol .

The next year he signed a contract with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , his assistant coach was Andrade . Abel brought the club to the final at the Copa Libertadores . There stood the club's opponent EC Santo André . At half time, Fluminense was 2-0. The Santo André club caught up with the deficit and it ended 2-2. Abel described the draw as the biggest defeat of his career. For this reason, he ended his career prematurely. After a six-month hiatus, he returned and signed a contract with Fluminense. At the state championship in Rio de Janeiro , he got the opportunity again to have brought a club to the final. The club lost the game and the club held him responsible for the defeat. After a year he moved to the Arab association al-Jazira Club . After three years he returned to Brazil to the club Fluminense FC. There was his assistant coach Leomir de Souza . In 2013 he won all championships with the club in which he participated. The football player's worth in 2013 was $ 700,000. In 2014 he returned to the Internacional Porto Alegre association . He stayed here for only one season and came back to the Fluminense after another stopover in the 2017 season. At the club he was honored on May 25, 2017 for supporting 250 games. On June 16, 2018, Braga terminated his contract with FLU.

In December 2018, Braga's renewed appointment at CR Flamengo was announced. After completing the national championship, which the club won, Braga left Flamengo at the end of May 2019.

On September 28, 2019, Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte announced that Braga would be the club's third coach in the 2019 championship .
