Laurent Robert (born May 21, 1975 in Saint-Benoît on Réunion as Pierre-Laurent Robert ) is a former French football player .

society

He began his career as a midfielder in his hometown of St. Benoît with the US Bénédictine, which has existed there since 1954 . From there he moved to the youth division of Stade Brest at a young age and from there to HSC Montpellier in 1991 . At HSC Montpellier, he was first in the B-team, later also in the professional team, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 1999 . One of his greatest successes there was a Champions League game against Rosenborg Trondheim in 2000, where he scored six goals in one game (final score: 7-2). He played for the Parisians for two years and was a regular.

In 2001 he moved to England for Newcastle United for £ 7.5m . During his time there he became known for his ability to master set pieces perfectly. He shot almost all of the free kicks and corners at Newcastle. He ran a total of 129 league games for the Magpies.

After four years Robert was loaned to Portsmouth FC in 2005 before moving to Benfica Lisbon in 2006 .

There he signed a contract for three and a half years, but could not fully develop his qualities as a winger and therefore moved to Levante UD after a few months on July 11, 2006 , who had just been promoted to the Spanish first division . But he could not play through and was only a substitute in his first season. In the 2007/2008 season he did not play for the Spaniards at all.

Therefore, the Frenchman moved again to Derby County on the British island in January 2008 .

After four games for the English, his contract was dissolved on April 2, 2008 and he moved to Canada for Toronto FC, which play in the North American professional league Major League Soccer.

On April 5, he made his debut for the club against DC United . On April 19, 2008, he scored his first and only goal for the club against Real Salt Lake . On August 19, 2008, he was released from Toronto.

On August 27, 2008, the Greek first division club AE Larisa announced the commitment of Robert. He was brought in to replace Nektarios Alexandrou , who had left the club a few days earlier.

Robert left Greece in December 2009 and has been without a club since then. Then there were contacts with Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain , but he ended his career shortly afterwards after he could not find a new employer.

National team

Robert made his international debut on August 18, 1999 against Northern Ireland . Before his last appearance in 2001, he was on the field nine times for his home country and scored an international goal. He was part of the team that won the 2001 Confederations Cup . He was also in five international matches for the French national B team from 1999 to 2001, for which he also scored once.
