Sociological Aspects of Rivalry

Both associations have their origins in the east of the city, which was mostly populated by industrial workers.

In the northeastern borough of Newton Heath , the United forerunner Newton Heath LYR Football Club was founded in 1878 . The abbreviation LYR stands for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway , which emerged in 1847 from the merger of several railway companies. The crew consisted entirely of workers from the railway company, hardly any of whom were born in Manchester. The Manchester Evening News 1887 stated in a match report: "With the exception of Wright, we did not find a native on the team." Railroad in 1892 as Newton Heath FC operating club for "Manchester Celtic" pleaded. Because the majority of the members saw this designation as a danger of possible sectarian conflicts, the proposal was rejected. The “Manchester United” proposal brought in by Louis Rocca, a 19-year-old son of Italian immigrants, finally found a majority. However, this wasn't Rocca's only idea that worked. Because he also had the brilliant idea of using the priests of the Catholic Church of Manchester as talent scouts by reporting every talent in their respective community to the club. In this way the association's connection to the Catholic Church was reinforced.

In contrast to the “non-local United”, which has also been based outside of Manchester since the club's own Old Trafford stadium was moved into in 1910, City likes to see itself as the “true Manchester club”; as the “people's club of Manchester”. The origins of City, whose various sports fields and stadiums have always been in the urban area of Manchester, lie in St. Mark's Church of England in West Gorton, southeast of the city center. The church, which came to Gorton in 1865, received a new pastor in the form of Arthur Connell in 1880, and it was above all his daughter Anna who had made a contribution to founding a football team. Because she believed that exercise could keep young men away from alcoholism and gang violence, both of which were widespread in east Manchester. Therefore, the Connells were looking for interested comrades from both denominations (both Protestants and Catholics) in their community. In 1887 the association moved to Ardwick, northeast of Gorton, and thus closer to the city center. Because of its new home, the still young club renamed itself to Ardwick FC, before seven years later it became the Manchester City Football Club.

An early activist with Ardwick FC was Steven Chesters-Thompson, who was also a founding member of a Masonic Lodge in 1887 . The first president of the newly formed Ardwick FC, Richard Stevenson, was also a member of the same lodge. Gradually the association came under the influence of Tories and Freemasons .

Despite the different religious currents surrounding the two clubs, religious conflicts always played a subordinate role in their rivalry. Only radical Protestant loyalists have a religiously motivated aversion to the “Catholic” United.

Derby story

The first edition of the Manchester Derby took place on November 12, 1881. At that time, St. Mark's (West Gorton) (from 1894 Manchester City) in Hyde Road hosted Newton Heath LYR Football Club (from 1902 Manchester United) for a friendly. The encounter ended with a 3-0 win for Newton Heath. The local newspaper at the time commented the encounter as "a respectable game". It should be ten years before the first game in an official competition. In the first qualifying round of the FA Cup 1891/92 , Newton Heath FC defeated Manchester City with 5-1 goals in a home game at the North Road city rivals.

With the rise of Newton Heath in the second-rate Football League Second Division 1894/95 there was on November 3, 1894 the first game at league level. In front of 14,000 spectators, the Citizens had to bow to the Heathens with 2: 5 goals on their domestic Hyde Road . At this first official derby, both teams competed with the following line-up:

  • City: George Hutchison, Harry Smith, John Walker, George Mann, Joseph Nash, Fred Dyer, Billy Meredith , Pat Finnerhan, Sandy Rowan, James Sharples, Bob Milarvie.
  • Newton Heath: William Douglas, John McCartney, Fred Erentz, George Perrins, James McNaught, William Davidson, John Clarkin, Robert Donaldson, James Dow, Richard Smith, James Peters.

City had to wait until December 7, 1895 for a first win (2-1) against the rivals. In 1906, ManUnited followed the Citizens , who had already risen in 1903, to the Football League First Division . With a 3-0 in front of 40,000 spectators, the Himmelblauen decided the first game for themselves.

Things were particularly tough between the two clubs in the 1970s. In the duel of the Football League First Division 1970/71 they met on December 12, 1970 at Old Trafford. After City made the 0-1 (final score 1: 4), there was a duel for the ball between George Best of United and Glyn Pardoe in the 23rd minute . Pardoe played the ball first, and Best slipped into Pardoe's legs. The City player suffered a complicated double fracture of his right leg and was briefly about to be amputated . He could only play again for Manchester City after two years.

In the first leg of the 1973/74 season , the players Lou Macari and Mike Doyle saw the red card . Both thought this was excessive and refused to leave the place. After a minute-long discussion, referee Clive Thomas sent both teams back to the dressing room. After a break, the referee brought the two teams back from the dressing rooms. Macari and Doyle were guarded by police officers to prevent them from returning to the field.

The fans also remembered the second leg on April 27, 1974. ManUnited needed every point against relegation, as they were two points behind 20th place at Southampton FC before the matchday and had a catch-up game against Stoke City two days later . The game remained goalless until the 84th minute, when Francis Lee played the ball in the penalty area to Denis Law . Law carried the ball by backheel into the goal from United . Denis Law only moved to the Citizens in the summer of 1973 after eleven years and 171 goals in 309 games for Manchester United . After the goal, fans stormed the Old Trafford pitch. Law was substituted after the goal with loud boos, played no more game for City and ended his career after the 1974 World Cup . Manchester United had to make their way to the second division after 36 years of excellence .

In the 1980s, Manchester City had to leave the First Division twice (1982 to 1985 and 1986 to 1989). In the first leg of the 1989/90 promotion season they defeated ManUnited with 5-1 goals. For the Red Devils this was the biggest derby defeat since 1955. For the Skyblues it was also the beginning of a 13-year streak without a win in the derby.

In the mid-1990s, Manchester City got into a sporting crisis. After relegation from the Premier League in 1995/96 , you found yourself in 1998 in the Football League Second Division , the third division. After two successive promotions, the club reached the top division again and has been first class without interruption since 2002. During the sporty decline of the Himmelblauen , United won four championship titles , twice the FA Cup and in 1999 the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup .

After 80 years, Manchester City left Maine Road for the City of Manchester Stadium . In the last derby on November 9, 2002 in front of 34,649 spectators, the newly promoted City defeated the city rivals with 3-1 goals. The first derby of the Premier League season 2009/10 ended with a 4-3 win for United in front of their own audience. After the initial 1-0 in the 2nd minute by Wayne Rooney , the Citizens equalized the lead of the Red Devils . In the 90th minute, striker Craig Bellamy scored 3: 3. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Michael Owen scored the winning 4: 3. At the time, United coach Alex Ferguson described the game as "probably the best Manchester derby of all time".

October 23, 2011 was a black day for Manchester United in derby history. The first leg at Old Trafford in the 2011/12 season ended with a clear 1: 6 defeat for the home side. The 75,487 spectators saw the highest derby and home defeat since February 12, 1955 (0: 5). The Citizens were able to achieve six goals against United in one game for the first time since 1926 . The last time the red devils conceded six goals against Huddersfield Town in front of their own audience was on September 10, 1930 . At the end of the 2011/12 season, the Skyblues celebrated their first championship title since 1968.

The first derby of the Premier League 2012/13 took place at the Etihad Stadium. The guests took the lead thanks to two goals (16 and 29 minutes) from Wayne Rooney. After the break, Yaya Touré (60th min.) And Pablo Zabaleta equalized in the 86th minute. In the second minute of stoppage time, Manchester United received a free kick. Robin van Persie kicked the direct free kick, deflected by a City player, the ball went unsustainable for goalkeeper Joe Hart to 2: 3 in the goal. While celebrating the goal, Rio Ferdinand was hit in the head by a two-pence coin and slightly injured. For City it was the first home defeat after 37 games.

After four derby defeats in the league for United, they defeated their city rivals 4-2 in front of their own audience in the 2014/15 season on April 12, 2015. City took the lead in the 8th minute thanks to Sergio Agüero , but then Ashley Young (14th min.), Marouane Fellaini (27th min.), Juan Mata (67th min.) And Chris Smalling (73rd min .) Met ) for the Red Devils . In the 89th minute, Agüero could only shorten to 4: 2. It was the 100th goal of Agüero in the shirt of the Citizens .

In the 2015/16 season , the first leg ended in a goalless draw on October 25, 2015 at Old Trafford. United won the second leg on March 20, 2016 with a goal from Marcus Rashford in the 16th minute. At 18 years and 141 days, he is the youngest goal scorer in the history of the derby.

As part of the International Champions Cup 2016, there was to be a duel between the two clubs in the Beijing National Stadium on July 25th . After heavy rainfall, however, the playing field in the bird's nest was unplayable and the game was canceled without replacement by the organizers in the interests of the players and their safety.

The first derby of the 2016/17 season on September 10, 2016 was dominated by the successful coaches Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho , who were signed for the new season. The former Wolfsburg Kevin De Bruyne , at the end of the Man of the Match , brought the Skyblues into the lead in the 15th minute at Old Trafford. The Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho increased for the guests in the 36th minute to 2-0. Shortly before the break, the newly signed Zlatan Ibrahimović used a mistake by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo , who had been brought from FC Barcelona before the season , to the 1: 2 goal in the 42nd minute . In the end it stayed at halftime and Manchester City left the field as a deserved winner. Mourinho could only win three of 17 games against Pep Guardiola, with six draws and eight defeats. For Manchester City it was the 50th derby win against their rivals. The second leg on April 27, 2017 ended in a goalless draw. It was Marouane Fellaini from the Reds for violent conduct in the 84th minute Sergio Aguero sent off. The game was originally supposed to take place on February 26 of that year, but since the Citizens had to compete in the FA Cup and United was in the EFL Cup final , the game was postponed.

On December 10, 2017, the first of the derby of the 2017/18 season took place at Old Trafford . The 1-0 lead of the Citizens was achieved in the 43rd minute by David Silva . Marcus Rashford equalized just two minutes later. Nicolás Otamendi scored the winning goal for the 2-1 victory in the 54th minute. Before the second leg on April 7, 2018, the Skyblues were first in the table, 16 points ahead of their city rivals in second place. With a win on matchday 33, Manchester City could have won their fifth league title early. In the first half, Vincent Kompany (25th min.) And İlkay Gündoğan (30th min.) Brought City into the lead at Etihad Stadium and brought them a big step closer to winning the title. After changing sides, Paul Pogba equalized the game with a double (53rd and 55th min.). In the 69th minute, Chris Smalling scored the decisive 2: 3 for ManUnited and prevented the Citizens from early championship celebration in their own stadium. For Manchester City it was the first home defeat in the Premier League since December 3, 2016. City were champions two game days later when United lost 1-0 at home to bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion .
