Linguistic origin of the name

Newton Heath takes its name from Old English and translates as "the new city on the heath ".

Historical facts

Culcheth Hall on the Medlock River (which runs through the neighborhood) once belonged to the Byron family, whose most famous family member was the English poet Lord Byron . French Huguenots settled in this area in the 16th century to avoid persecution on mainland Europe. The Huguenots brought weaving and bleaching to Newton Heath. The new weaving mills completely changed the neighborhood's domestic industries. They became fully mechanized mass productions. In 1825 the first machine weaving mill was founded in Newton Heath - the Newton Silk Mill, which still exists today.

The establishment of the Rochdale Canal made it easier to move raw materials and manufactured goods into the area. Later other industries such as mechanical engineering , rope works, soap factories , matchstick factories or glassworks came to Newton Heath, thereby changing the district from an agricultural community to an industrialized community. In the 18th century Oldham Road was tolled and a barrier was installed on Lambs Lane. This street is still the main street in the district today. Due to the industrial revolution in England, the population of Newton Heath increased twenty-fold.

Manchester United

Newton Heath is the birthplace of Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway FC, which later became Manchester United football club . The association was founded in this district in 1878. In 1902 the name was changed to Manchester United FC, the shirts were yellow-green (not red like today). An old nickname for Manchester United is "the Heathens" due to their origins.

The district today

Newton Heath became one of the most important locations for mechanical engineering by English companies such as Mather & Platt, Avro and Heenan & Froude. The district also owns the Newton Heath Maintenance depot with over 2000 employees.
