Johann Rütger Brüning (born August 13, 1775 in Elberfeld ; † July 22, 1837 there ) was a German politician of the early 19th century. From 1814 to 1837 he was the first Lord Mayor of Elberfeld.

Life

Brüning, whose family originally came from Radevormwald , became mayor of the city of Elberfeld (today a district of Wuppertal ) in 1806 and remained so for a year until 1807. He became an alderman in the city council in 1809 and became the first on January 13, 1814 Holder of the newly created office of Lord Mayor in Elberfeld. Under him, the construction of the town hall (now the old Elberfeld town hall in which the Von der Heydt Museum is housed) began in the tower courtyard in 1828 . He also campaigned for the establishment of a regional court in Elberfeld , which the city was granted in 1834. He remained Lord Mayor of the city until his death on July 22, 1837, and was succeeded by Johann Adolf von Carnap . He was buried in the former cemetery on Baustraße.

A street in Wuppertal is named after Brüning today.
