Abraham Frowein (born January 29, 1766 in Barmen , † March 16, 1829 in Elberfeld ) was a German politician. He was elected the last mayor of the city of Elberfeld in 1807 . His successor Johann Rütger Brüning became the city's first mayor .

mayor

Abraham Frowein, born as the son of the bleacher Johann Kaspar Frowein and his wife Anna Gertrud Bergmann in Barmen, moved with his parents to the neighboring town of Elberfeld at an early age. Kaspar Frowein , one of his ancestors, had already moved from Lennep to Elberfeld in 1601 and was even elected mayor in 1617. However, the family later emigrated to Barmen and did not return to Elberfeld until the end of the 18th century. Frowein had been a partner in the factory “ Abr. & Gebr. Frowein ”. Initially without any contact with the city's politicians, it didn't look like he would be able to start a career in this direction. It was only through his marriage to Charlotta Luisa Weber (* October 8, 1770 - December 27, 1833) on July 31, 1794 that he was able to establish contacts. Weber was the daughter of Daniel Adolf Weber , mayor from 1788. A year later, Frowein was elected to the city council. In 1806 he ran for the first time in the election of the mayor, but drew the short straw against Johann Rütger Brüning . Since the electoral terms lasted only one year at the time, it was re-elected on May 1, 1807, this time Frowein won the election. The merchant Karl Ludwig Grünenthal (1770–1808), Kaspar van der Beeck, who was nominated several times but never won an election, and Leonhard Feldhoff had also created themselves.

End of mayorship

After Napoleon Bonaparte gained control of the Rhine Confederation in 1806, he was also the ruler of the Duchy of Berg . He appointed his son-in-law Joachim Murat as Duke of the Duchy of Berg. When the Rhine Confederation was founded , the Duchy rose to become the Grand Duchy of Berg . In December 1807, Grand Duke Murat abolished Elberfeld's estate constitution from 1610, thus deposed the mayor and introduced the French system of municipalities . After Napoleon's empire collapsed in 1814 and Elberfeld was again allowed to elect its own city administration, Frowein was a member of the city council for many years.
