Ilija Pantelić (born August 2, 1942 in Kozica near Banja Luka , Independent State of Croatia , † November 17, 2014 in Novi Sad , Serbia ) was a Yugoslav football goalkeeper and coach.
He was not related to Dragan Pantelić , another former Yugoslav national goalkeeper who also completed part of his career in French professional football .
Career
society
Ilija Pantelić began his career in 1958 as a youth player with the Serbian club BAK Bela Crkva . In 1960 he completed his first senior season at FK Radnički Sombor , from where he moved to FK Vojvodina Novi Sad in 1961 after just one season . With this club he immediately won the Yugoslav runner-up and in 1966 the title of national champion.
After 1969 had the opportunity to continue his career abroad, he moved to France in 1969 , where he played for two years for the second division Racing Paris-Neuilly ( renamed Racing Joinville for the 1970/71 season ). After a brief interlude at Olympique Marseille , he moved to SEC Bastia , where he became a regular goalkeeper in the following period. With the Corsicans he reached the French Cup final against his previous club from Marseille in 1972, but lost 2-1. Bastia retaliated in the game for the Trophée des champions , the forerunner of the French Supercup , with a 5-2 win against Olympique. In 1974 he joined Paris Saint-Germain FC , who had been promoted to Division 1 ; at PSG he stayed until the end of his playing career in 1977. At the end of the 1976/77 season he formed the coaching team at the capital club for six games with Pierre Alonzo .
When the trade magazine France Football compiled a list of the best foreign footballers of all time in the French professional league in 2012, the editorial team put Ilija Pantelić in 30th place - as the second best goalkeeper ("formidable on the line, excellent at high balls") behind his compatriot Ivan Ćurković . Pantelić was married to Miss Yugoslavia from 1961.
National team
Between 1964 and 1968 Pantelić guarded the goal of the Yugoslav national team in 18 international matches . In 1968 he took part in the finals of the European Football Championship with Yugoslavia and played the semi-finals against England (1-0) and the finals against hosts Italy (1-1 after extra time, 0-2).
