The Copa de la Coronación (German: Coronation Cup ), officially Concurso Madrid de Foot-Ball Association (German: Madrid's Football Association's competition ), is considered to be the forerunner of the Spanish football cup, the Copa del Rey . The tournament took place on a proposal from Carlos Padrós , who later became president of Madrid FC . This wanted a football tournament in honor of the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. organize, who reached the age of majority that year and thus got control of the Spanish state.
The competition started on May 13th with the first round game and ended on May 16, 1902 with the game for the consolation trophy. Two teams from Barcelona, FC Barcelona and Club Español de Foot-ball , two teams from Madrid, Madrid FC and New Foot-Ball , and Club Vizcaya , a selection team from Bilbao with players from Athletic de Bilbao and Bilbao FC , took part in the tournament part.
The final took place on May 15, 1902 in the Hipódromo de Madrid . There Vizcaya de Bilbao won 2-1 against FC Barcelona. The success of the tournament led to it being officially played under the name of the Spanish Championship (Copa del Rey) the following year . That is also the reason why it is recognized by the Spanish association RFEF not as an official, but as a friendship tournament.
