The 1911 Copa del Rey was the ninth edition of the Spanish soccer cup competition.
The competition took place from April 9th to 15th, 1911. In order to prevent a renewed separation into several tournaments, as in the previous edition , the claims of the dissatisfied teams, who demanded a staging in the stadium of the defending champion, were granted. All the games took place in the Estadio Jolaseta (Athletic's stadium) in the municipality of Getxo in the Vizcaya (Basque: Biscay) region, near the Basque capital Bilbao , so for the first time not in Madrid . A total of 13 teams were supposed to take part in the tournament, but only eleven started because Deportivo La Coruña and the team from the Madrid Engineering Academy ( Academia de Ingenieros ) canceled shortly before the event on the grounds that they were against the use of foreign players.
In addition, the then record winner Madrid FC , who also took part in the alternative tournament in San Sebastián last year , could no longer register in time.
Attendees
11 teams finally took part in the tournament: hosts Athletic Bilbao , Bilbao (not to be confused with Bilbao FC) and Real Sociedad de Fútbol from the Basque Country, FC Barcelona and Español de Barcelona from Catalonia, Sociedad Gimnástica Española from Madrid, Real Club Fortuna de Vigo from Galicia, Santander Football Club from Cantabria, and the football teams of the Artillery Academy of Segovia ( Academia de Artillería ) and the Cavalry Academy of Valladolid ( Academia de Caballería ) from Castile and León and the Infantry Academy of Toledo ( Academia de Infantería ) Castile-La Mancha.

Apr 9, 1911 | Bilbao | 2: 1 | Academia de Artillería |
After the game between Athletic Bilbao and Fortuna de Vigo, Real Sociedad de Fútbol protested against Athletic's victory after two English players who, in Real Sociedad's view, had violated Spanish residence regulations. They therefore called for a replay, which the Spanish Association refused. In response, Real Sociedad left immediately, with the support of other clubs who threatened to leave, preventing Athletic Bilbao from using the two players in question for the remainder of the tournament. However, they did not repeat the game against Fortuna.

Apr 12, 1911 | FC Barcelona | 4-0 | Gimnástica de Madrid |
Apr 12, 1911 | Athletic Bilbao | 4: 1 | Bilbao |
After losing to FC Barcelona, Gimnástica de Madrid complained about the line-up of Barça goalkeeper Reñé, so that the Spanish Association scheduled a replay. With reference to the use of English by Athletic Bilbao, FC Barcelona did not appear and was therefore disqualified, whereby Gimnástica was declared the winner.

Apr 14, 1911 | Español de Barcelona | called off | Academia de Caballeria |
With a score of 2-0 for Athletic Bilbao, Gimnástica left the game and with it the tournament, because in their opinion the referee ignored rough fouls of the opponent. The team from the Academia de Caballería military academy left the tournament before the game started because they had to return to their military academy. Thus, Español moved into the final without a fight.
