The Estadio de Chamartín (actually Campo del Real Madrid Fútbol Club ) was a football stadium in the Spanish capital, Madrid . It served as the home of Real Madrid from 1924 to 1946 and had a capacity of around 22,500 spectators.

history

After the end of the 1922/23 season and winning the Campeonato Centro , Real Madrid had to leave its first football stadium, the Estadio de O'Donnell , because the owner of the property Laureano García Camisón wanted to build houses there. The team then moved to the Velódromo de Ciudad Lineal , a former cycling track . For the first time, this offered a natural turf as a playing area and space for 8,000 spectators, but it was difficult to reach for the fans due to the remote location, which led to a decrease in the number of visitors to the stadium.

The club responded by planning a club-owned venue tailored to the needs of football as well as club members and supporters. The architect was the former player of the José María Castell club , who had designed the Metropolitano de Madrid stadium . As early as 1923, the association acquired the necessary land north of the then urban area in the municipality of Chamartín de la Rosa , which was later to become part of the Chamartín district of Madrid . The construction work for the stadium began at the end of 1923, in addition to the venue itself, a training and hockey field, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a gym, a restaurant and a club building were also built on the grounds.

On May 17, 1924, the new stadium, which at that time had a capacity of 15,000 spectators, around 4,000 of them in a covered grandstand, was ceremoniously opened with a friendly against the reigning FA Cup winner Newcastle United . The game ended in a surprising 3-2 win for Real Madrid and the first goal was scored by Félix Pérez . The official stadium name was actually Campo del Real Madrid Fútbol Club ( German : Spielfeld von Real Madrid Fútbol Club ), but the name Estadio de Chamartín, which is used due to the location among the supporters, quickly established itself .

The new home of the Royal was the scene of the first two title wins in 1929 created Primera División be both 1931/32 and 1932/33 brought Madrid FC as the club during the Second Republic meant the championship. The cup finals of 1931 , 1932 and 1935 also took place in the stadium . On May 21, 1933, the Spanish national team celebrated the highest victory in their history by beating Bulgaria 13-0 at the Estadio de Chamartín . On March 11 of the following year, the Spaniards laid the foundation stone for their first qualification for a World Cup finals in this stadium with a 9-0 win against Portugal .

With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the decline of the Estadio de Chamartín began. Just like the Real Madrid club itself, the venue also suffered from the consequences of the armed conflict. Among other things, the stadium served as a prison camp and was in poor condition after the end of the war. After extensive repairs, the Estadio de Chamartín was finally able to reopen on October 22, 1939 in a Derbi madrileño against Atlético Aviación , the game ended with a 2-1 for the home side. Although the stadium subsequently had a capacity of around 22,500 spectators and was the venue for the cup finals in 1941 and 1942 , plans for a modern and much larger arena began with the presidency of Santiago Bernabéus from 1943. The construction of this finally began on October 27, 1944. The grounds of the newly planned arena, which should extend to the Paseo de la Castellana , were a little further west, with the northwest corner of the old Estadio de Chamartín in the east stand of the newly planned stadium towered, which is why the other three tiers were built in the first construction phase. The last match at the Estadio de Chamartín took place on May 15, 1946, on the occasion of the celebrations in honor of the patron saint of the city, Saint Isidore of Madrid , between Real Madrid and CD Málaga , the guests won the friendly 4-5. As a result, Real Madrid played the 1946/47 season and the beginning of the following season provisionally in the Metropolitano de Madrid Stadium , which they had to share with local rivals Atlético before the newly built Nuevo Estadio Chamartín , now known , on December 14, 1947 than Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was able to inaugurate.
