The Estadio de O'Donnell was a football stadium in the Spanish city of Madrid . It served as the home of Real Madrid from 1912 to 1923 and had a capacity of around 3,500.

history

In the early years, Madrid FC, as Real Madrid was called at the time, did not have a real stadium. Between 1900 and 1902, the team played mainly on the Campo de Estrada and between 1902 and 1910 mostly on the Explanada de la plaza de toros , a plot of land near the former bullring Plaza de toros de Goya on which the La Taurina tavern became an improvised club building and a racecourse in the Pardiñas district. As early as 1910, Madrid FC began playing their games on a site on Calle de O'Donnell , surrounded by the streets of Narváez , Fernán González and Duque de Sesto . The property was owned by Laureano García Camisón , and the football club paid around 1000 pesetas in annual rent.

In 1912, the members of the Madrid FC club began repairing and leveling the playing area and building a wooden border that separated the newly built auditorium from the playing field. This was the first real soccer stadium in the city. On October 31, 1912, the Estadio de O'Donnell was officially opened in a match between the home side and Irun Sporting Club , the game ended in a goalless 0-0. A little later a small roofed main grandstand with a capacity for 216 spectators was built. The venue held a total of around 6,000 spectators.

In the Estadio de O'Donnell, the final of the Copa del Rey , the most important club competition in Spain at the time, took place twice . In 1913 defeated Racing Irún local rivals Athletic Bilbao after a replay with 1: 0 after the first encounter with 2: 2 had been completed. In 1918, the home team Madrid FC lost 2-0 to Real Unión Irún in the final .

In 1923, the club had to leave the Estadio de O'Donnell because the property owner had decided to build houses on the site. Real Madrid moved to the Velódromo de Ciudad Lineal in April before the club was able to inaugurate the club's own Estadio de Chamartín on May 17, 1924 .

International match at the Estadio de O'Donnell

The only game of the Spanish national team at O'Donnell took place on October 18, 1921 against Portugal . It was the Selección's second appearance on home soil after their successful debut at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp and the first in the capital, Madrid . It was also the Portuguese’s first official international match. The match ended with a 3-1 victory for the Spaniards and the goals of the home team were scored by Paulino Alcántara (2) and Manuel Meana, while Alberto Augusto scored the guests with a hand penalty.

Trivia

Real Madrid's local rivals Atlético Madrid played in a stadium of the same name from 1913 to 1923. This sometimes leads to the false assumption that both teams shared the field. In fact, the Campo de O'Donnell, where the Rojiblancos played their home games, was about 500 meters southwest, surrounded by the streets of Calle de Narváez , Menorca and Lope de Rueda .
