Karl Mellmann

Karl Mellmann (born September 9, 1911 in Hamburg ; † not known) was a German police officer (DVP) . He was a major general and for many years head of main departments in the Ministry of the Interior (MdI) of the GDR .

Life

After attending elementary school and high school with a high school diploma, he studied law . He then worked as a lawyer . When war broke out in 1939, he was drafted into the armed forces for military service. As a captain he was taken prisoner by the Soviets, attended an Antifa school and became a member of the National Committee for Free Germany (NKFD) .

In 1945 he returned to Germany, became a member of the KPD / SED and a member of the DVP. As VP inspector, he was deputy head of the criminal investigation department and as such was involved in the investigations in preparation for the Waldheim trials . Subsequently, as Colonel of the VP, he was deputy or head of the education / training department in the Ministry of the Interior. After the formation of an independent combat groups department in the MdI in 1961, which was directly subordinate to the deputy minister for armed organs, Willi Seifert , Mellmann became head of this department, which was upgraded to the main department in 1965. On June 30, 1964, he was appointed major general. Mellmann was also the head of the Dynamo Northwest sports community and remained head of the main combat groups department until 1972.

Mellmann last lived as a veteran in Berlin.
