Emil Walter (born April 7, 1900 in Pforzheim ; † March 1, 1952 ibid), in Spain also Emil Walter Buckhard , was a German football player. The right-back played for FC Barcelona from 1923 to 1933 , winning the Cup three times and the Spanish Championship in 1929 .
The footballer, who emerged from Germania Brötzingen , had professional reasons that led him to Spain, where he first played for Unió Esportiva Figueres in the Catalan regional league and was known for his extraordinary shooting power. The famous neighboring club soon became aware of his abilities and from 1924/25 "Emilio" Walter wore the Barça jersey.
In addition to the championship title, the German defender won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona in 1925, 1926 and 1928 ; Overall, he brought it to 1933 on 242 appearances in competitive games. Immortalized on collective pictures in Spain and invited as a guest of honor at the club anniversary in 1949, Emil Walter has remained largely unknown in Germany. After his return at the end of the 1930s, he was in charge of RSV Hückeswagen as a coach . After the war he was the first chairman of his old Brötzinger association.
At that time, foreign professionals were out of the question for appearances in the national team of the DFB due to the negative attitude of the federal government towards professional sport. Even the journalist Walther Bensemann was amazed and "pleased to see a compatriot in such a pleasant role at this game" after visiting Barcelona in 1929. Walter had contributed to the 4-0 over the Bolton Wanderers in the jersey of the selection of Catalonia that day .
Emil Walter died on March 1, 1952. Germania Brötzingen's youth department now organizes an Emilio Walter Cup every year .
Trivia
The soccer player appears in part as Emil Walter Buckhard on Spanish websites. In Spain it is customary to add the mother's maiden name to the father's name. It is not known whether the spelling was incorrect and whether Emil Walter was related to national player Theodor Burkhardt , also from Germania Brötzingen, or by marriage.
