Gwendolyne
Gwendolyne was the Spanish contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 1970 in Amsterdam . Julio Iglesias sang this song in Spanish and wrote both the lyrics and the music.
The ballad is about the eponymous Gwendolyne Bollore from Cambridge, who Julio Iglesias met during his time as a law student and goalkeeper in the junior team of the Spanish football club Real Madrid . His participation in the Eurovision Song Contest at the Rai Congrescentrum in Amsterdam was his first international television appearance. Iglesias had start number nine behind the Luxembourg contribution Je suis tombe du ciel by David Alexandre Winter and in front of Dominique Dussault , who represented Monaco with the song Marlene .
Iglesias finished fourth with eight points in a field of twelve participants. After the Eurovision Song Contest, Enrique Martin Garea, producer and founder of the Spanish music label Hispavox, criticized the voting behavior of Germany and Portugal : “Germany and Portugal have let us down. If they had voted for us, Julio would have won ”.
Gwendolyne reached number one on the Spanish charts. The piece was recorded in Spanish, English, French, Italian and German.
