Russel Norman
Russel Norman (born June 2, 1967 in Brisbane , Australia ) is a New Zealand politician and environmentalist . He is a member of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand , was spokesperson and co-chair of the party and was a member of the New Zealand Parliament from June 2008 to October 2015. In November 2015, Norman assumedthe position of Executive Director of Greenpeace New Zealand .
Education and private matters
Russel Norman grew up in Brisbane with five other siblings in a hard-working family. His parents were Labor supporters until the 1980s , but broke with New Labor policies during that time. Russel was shaped by this and joined the extra-parliamentary alternative movements early on during his high school days . A study of the medicine to be in developing countries to get involved, he broke off and was interested from there more for the policy .
He completed his bachelor's degree with honors on the topic of the Alliance Party and thus had his first contacts in New Zealand. In 1996 he began his studies in political science , which he completed in New Zealand with a doctorate. He has lived in New Zealand since 1997 and lives in Wellington with his partner Katya Paquin .
Professional career
From 1988 to 1995 he worked in various jobs in Australia, including a. in a car factory and most recently as a gardener. When he arrived in New Zealand, he first worked as a farm worker on an organic farm and an organic nursery from 1997 to 1999 , then switched in 2001 to do a year of training in non-profit management. At the same time he was secretary to two members of the Green Party . From 2002 to 2004 he was a member of the Greens parliamentary group in order to take over the position of campaign manager the following year . In 2005 he became a research assistant at the Association of University Employees and did so until mid-2006.
Political career
Russel Norman was active in numerous campaigns for environmental protection and social justice in Australia and from 1995 to 1996 with the Australian Greens . After moving to New Zealand in 1997, he joined the Green Party in New Zealand that same year. Here, too, active in many different groups, he finally made it onto the list of candidates for the parliamentary elections of 2002 through his work in the party organization and in the parliamentary areas of the party and was elected co-chair alongside Jeanette Fitzsimons in 2006. In the parliamentary elections in 2008, he finally got into parliament on the list on which he took second place. After nine years as co-chair, Russel Norman resigned on May 29, 2015, but held his parliamentary mandate until October 30, 2015, the day he resigned his parliamentary mandate to join Greenpeace.
