Rodney David Donald , known to the public as Rod Donald , (born October 10, 1957 in New Zealand , † November 6, 2005 in Christchurch , New Zealand) was a politician of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and wasone of the first Cowith Jeanette Fitzsimons -Chairman of the party.

Life

Rod Donald was born on October 10, 1957 in New Zealand to David Donald and Joyce Donald . At the age of 15 he founded an ecology action group in his school and a year later he joined the Values ​​Party . Another year later, at the age of 18, he cycled for her from Christchurch to Nelson to become the party's campaign manager. After campaigning and working on an organic farm, he returned to Christchurch and edited the Canterbury Environment Journal at the Canterbury Environment Center . He moved into the indoor booth, helped homeless people there and was involved in setting up a recycling center. In 1978 there were 20 houses among the 120 residential units in the area that had formed a community and met regularly every week at Rod's house for a " community crumble " . Also was Donald in the protests against the controversial Springbok tour of the South African national rugby team in 1981 involved in New Zealand.

From 1986 to 1990 Donald lived with his family in Wellington , where he worked as a public affairs manager for the International Volunteer Service and at the same time was able to volunteer at Trade Aid in the Petone store . In 1990 he returned to Christchurch and became a manager for Trade Aid Importers , a job he held until he entered parliament six years later.

In 1994 he joined the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and was co-leader of the party alongside Jeanette Fitzsimons in June 1995 .

In 1997 Donald was one of the active protesters in the Anti Bases Campaign against the Waihopai Spy Base near Blenheim and together they managed to prevent New Zealand from supporting the United States in their warfare.

Donald was his party's spokesman for finance and national spokesman for the Electoral Reform Coalition from 1989 to 1993, which led to the 1993 vote in a referendum in favor of mixed member proportional suffrage.

Rod Donald died on November 6, 2005 of rare myocarditis as a result of complications from a Campylobacter infection.

Rod Donald was married to Nicola Shirlaw . The marriage produced three daughters.

Honors

In his honor, the Rod Donald Hut was opened on the Banks Peninsula in May 2016 .
