James Shaw (2014)

James Shaw (born May 6, 1973 in Wellington ) is a New Zealand politician . He is a member of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand , a member of the New Zealand Parliament sinceSeptember 20, 2014,and co-chair of his party since May 30, 2015.

Life

James Peter Edward Shaw was born in Wellington on May 6, 1973 and raised for the first twelve years of his life by his mother, who was a history teacher, trade unionist, and feminist. He grew up in the Aro Valley district , which in Wellington is considered something of the spiritual home of the Green Party in New Zealand. His mother sent him first to the private school of Scots College in Wellington and then from 1985 to Wellington High School . During this time, Shaw , fatherless, had two mothers because his birth mother found a life partner. After graduating from high school, Shaw studied religion at Victoria University of Wellington , but did not complete his bachelor's degree .

Shaw lives with his wife Annabel , a lecturer at the Victoria University of Wellington , in the district of Aro Valley in Wellington .

Professional career

In 1997 Shaw left New Zealand and went to Brussels and one year later to London to work as a consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers (pwc). During this time he completed his Masters in Sustainable Development and Business Management . After numerous business trips, such as B. in the Andes region for a microfinance project or to Borneo for a hydropower project, he moved back to New Zealand in 2010, where he settled again in Wellington.

Political career

At the age of 16, Shaw came into contact with the newly founded Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand at his school and found himself a year later as a candidate for Wellington City Council for his party. In 1993 he became an election campaign manager for the Victoria University Student's Association .

After spending 13 years abroad, he resumed his engagement in the party and was elected to parliament in September 2014 from his party's list. After winning the battle vote for the position of co-chairman of the party, which he won with 69 votes against his competitor Kevin Hague , who was able to unite 56 votes, he took over the role of spokesman for his party for the party in parliament Finance, Justice, Sustainable Development, Climate, Tourism and Trade and Investment.

After the Labor Party formed a government in October 2017, in which the Green Party participated, Shaw took over the ministerial office for climate change, statistics and, as an associate minister (associate minister ), for finance.
