history

The history of the settlement of the area began in 1788 with the production of hemp and linen in the Real Feitoria do Linho Cânhamo , which supplied ropes and sails for ships. From 1824 the area was earmarked for settlement by German immigrants . The shoemaker Mathias Franzen came there first. At the end of the 19th century the leather industry began to develop alongside agriculture. Shoe production became the determining factor in Estância Velha. In 1930 the place became the 10th district of São Leopoldo and finally in 1959 it became independent as a municipality.
