Portão is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 40 km north of Porto Alegre . Neighboring are the towns of São José do Hortêncio (N), Lindolfo Collor (N), Estância Velha (O), São Leopoldo (SO), Sapucaia (SO), Nova Santa Rita (S), Capela de Santana (W) and São Sebastião do Cai (NW). Portão was originally part of the municipalities of Canoas , Estância Velha, São Leopoldo and São Sebastião do Cai.
