Double degree

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The terms double degree or double degree generally describe the simultaneous purchase of at least two academic degrees as part of a study without the need for the respective curricula must be completed twice. This is possible because the study programs involved either have common teaching content (e.g. engineering basics for a double degree in engineering and industrial engineering ) or because achievements can be offset against each other (e.g. in an elective area).

In the context of the internationalization of higher education, a double degree specifically means the double degree at two universities in different countries. Within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program , such transnational courses are to be given special support.

to form

Double degrees come in two different forms.

With a joint degree, there is a joint study program that concludes with the acquisition of both academic degrees from the participating universities. The curriculum is integrated in such a way that it is imperative to study at both universities.

In the case of a double degree , on the other hand, there are two fundamentally independent study programs that can each be completed separately. However, the offers are parallelized to the extent that a suitable course selection and mutual crediting enables a double degree, which requires relatively little additional effort compared to the individual degree.

procedure

As a rule, students are enrolled in a course of study at a university and complete another course of study in the same or a similar subject at the same or another university during this course.

In the case of international double degrees, this often takes place as part of a semester abroad at the respective partner university. So is z. For example, a three-semester course in International Management at the University of Fulda includes a two-semester study abroad at West Virginia University . The double degree consists of the Master of Arts from the German university and the Master of Business Administration from the partner university abroad.

Alternatively, the students can commute between the universities on a daily basis if they are close enough. One example of this is the International Management course with a Danish focus, which is offered by the European University of Flensburg in cooperation with the Syddansk Universitet in Sønderborg . The course takes place alternately on a daily basis in Flensburg and Sønderborg and concludes with the German Bachelor of Arts in International Management and the Danish Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration and Foreign Languages.
